Good sub, and small mains

No, I don't have those speakers. What's the intended application (rehearsal space, med. venues, etc.)? Should we assume you're on a very limited budget?

I've got a pair of those in the unpowered version that I use for monitors sometimes. They don't sound bad for monitors for vocals / horns. The main drawback? "One piezo horn". Unless you eq it carefully that horn can be harsh. Also, 300hz seems pretty high of a crossover point. I'd think 100hz to 200hz might be better.

As a 50 something guy with hip and back issues, I decided to downsize and lighten my PA several years ago. I went with EV SX 300 (12" and horn, about 35 lbs each). The EV's are efficient, and I have A-B'ed them against a number of other speakers and they are very smooth and pleasing to the ear as well. They're a bit pricey but I got my pair on FeeBay for about $500 and they are worth every penny. For Subs, I use either Peavey PR subs (1-15", about 35 or so lbs.) or, if I need more low end I have a pair of Yorkville pulse 18" cabinets that I put Eminence Omega pro 18's in. I'm the guy who breaks the "only replace speakers with OEM speakers" rule. My Pulse 18's with non-OEM Eminence speakers are pretty damn impressive for such a mongrel combination.

This is for small venue gigs. I want it stereo so I can play mp3s between sets. I was hopeing the smaller speakers would be better for dispersion.

I thought crossing over at 300hz would take most of the load off the mains so 50watts a piece would be sufficient.

It also allows me to use the sub as my amp if I have all the fundamental pitches contained in 300hz. The last cover band I played with I could hear the sub better than my stage monitor.

I play Reggae out of an Aguilar 500 watt head with two Aguilar 2x10 cabinets stacked for vertical alignment. I want more low end on stage. How about using a powered sub to extend below my rig (which I know is not particularly voiced for Reggae) ? I like the QSC K-Sub. It has 1000 watts and uses a bandpass box with 2 - 12's. Now, I plead some ignorance, because I have not read about this being done - or has it ? You see, I'd put the K-Sub right next to my bass rig. Is there a reason why this question is not seen on forums?

higgi--even the cheapest mid-high woofer should be able to handle 150hz or so without much trouble.
The octave between 150 and 300hz will sound muffled and unfocused coming from a sub, and probably be louder than you want it to be.
This octave quickly creates ear fatigue in the audience when louder than the others, which will cause their sensitivity to highs to fade, among other unpleasantness. And it just sounds wrong. Personally, I always end up seriously notching at least one if not all of the 1/3 octave bands in this range.
Another point is that subs don't like higher freqs than they were designed for at all, and it can even lead to premature voice coil failure.

The main thing is to set it up and really test the system at practice, or hire an experienced soundman for the first show or three, to tune it for you.

Why do you want more low-end on stage? Do you have FOH / PA support? The issue has been discussed in various ways for years. Extended low-end stage wash is more problematic than beneficial IME. Your objective would be better served by placing said subwoofer enclosures in a properly voiced & balanced FOH rig.

Exactly. And they use a 6inch speaker to balance out the top end for a full range speaker cab.

I bought the passive version of Kustom 10s. They are not bad. I cross at 300hz and like it so far.
