We were on the rail in 2010 right in front of Mike in Alpharetta...awesome being so close and FEELING the bass. Then in 2011 we went to Alpharetta and the storms were awful, the show was stopped in the middle of 'Mound' and I thought we might not make it out due to all of the lightning, wind, and rain. 4 inches of water in the pit....yikes! Sleepy, I was four rows behind you! Made the last four shows there, what magic. July 3-4, 2010 was a life changer for me... My first real experiences with the band. I'm just down 280 in Auburn, just noticed you were in Bham.

For me, Mike IS Phish... And Fish is Phish... And Paige is Phish... And Trey is phishy when it suits him...

Anyhow... I share no gear in common with Mike besides EMGs on a 5er. But I do shoot for a Mikish, Philish sound.

Been seeing them since 1993

My favorite Chalkdust, and magical everywhere else.

Before I play any big soccer game, I put on that Chalkdust to get my blood boiling.... works like a charm.

It was one of three shows in my life that I would call "perfect". The other two are The Grateful Dead on 10/9/89 and my first Phish show on 7/25/93. It was a special night. It doesn't hurt that I was in the 23rd row in the center. It was one of those nights when you walked through the crowd and there was just so much anticipation and the vibe was super positive. Everyone was just knowing that there would be something amazing happening. From the first notes of Punch You in the Eye you could feel it, and it only got better from there. The crazy thing is that it wasn't like one of those shows that you look back on and think it was otherworldly, you were sitting there the whole time knowing that there was probably no way they could ever top this.

Start to finish this show was spectacular. It's not eXactly easy to describe 17 years later...

Oh yeah, all that AND we (the audience) won the chess game that night!!!!!!

I'm in. I'm a big fan of Phish, and first saw them at the Santa Monica Civic Center back in 1990 with a little known, and very unimpressive Dave Matthews Band (although the band was very good, he wasn't, IMO) opening for them (they were still touring with opening acts back then). Have seen too many shows to count since then, one of the highlights being Halloween in Vegas where they did Velvet Underground's 'Loaded'. Last show I saw was last summers show at the Hollywood Bowl.

On that note, I didn't know Mike played an SYB-5. I wonder how he has it configured. This pedal doesn't get a lot of love, but I find it pretty versatile. It's a staple on my board. I would love to know how he uses it.

Is it SYB-5 or a 3?

I believe Mike has it configured on a blend, with a sound set up close to his "Boogie On" Deep Impact sound, except his filter is closing way slower. From what I can tell from listening and an educated guess, he's set the blend so it just *barely* colors his super-deep low end (find a recent live Carini or Harry Hood, you'll know when it comes on).

It sounds like it's his normal tone cranked, and a guy backstage with a five watt amp is playing synth.

Big fan of Gordo, Lesh, Schools.... but all very very different IMO. I love Brownie, but he is not even in the same ball park as the other gentlemen.

Schools tone is his thing for me. Schools playing Chilly Water....

Gordo's brilliant use of effects. Down with Disease. Nuff said.

Phil's playing. Jerry goes up, Phill goes down.


Can't wait. In three weeks I get two nights of Furthur & Allman Brothers Band, and one night of Brownstien (Conspirator).

You can count me in too! This will be my first TB club. :D


My wife had a baby last year so no touring for me. Hopefully they'll play Merryweather again so I can see a local show. I went on a ten show tour back in 2010 and the band was on like it was the 90's again. Seeing them in Connecticut was amazing! It felt like I was walking into Bartertown from Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome when I got there. I'm glad they took a break a when they did. The scene was getting to be too many trashed college kids just going to score drugs.

Although it's not Gordo related, I saw Trey with the Baltimore Symphony and it was incredible. It was awesome to hear the classical musicians change their intonation to match up with Trey's guitar when he would go high up the neck.

Saw Gordo at State Theater last year and it was great to see him at such a small club.

Schools was the whole reason I bought my Modulus (although I went with the Q5). However, I bought the same preamp he has (Demeter VTBP-201s) and I hated the tone. I sold it within the week I bought it and went back to my SVP-CL.

Gordo does use some insane effects. All I need now...Deep Impact and Lovetone Meatball...but I don't think i will ever get them...they are way too manual for me...I need something easy.

I don't own a Meatball, but the Groove Regulator is a Meatball clone, and I love it. I long for a Deep Impact, but like the sounds I can coax out of POG2> SA MWBDP> SA BEF Pro until an extra grand finds its way into my hands to blow on a single pedal. Not holding my breath.

What's your favorite Phish song to play? Mine is probably Runaway Jim. Such a fun jam!

Cool thread, Sleepy! Mike is one of my favs. My favorite Gordo interaction was the first time I saw/met the band. In 1988 I went to a small off campus party at Amherst College (I was attending UMass, Amherst) with my brother- to "check out this band from Vermont and meet friends.." As soon as I got to the party I was stunned by how good the band was; it was Phish playing "Take the A Train into Peaches en Regalia..", they had the small trampolines, Trey was playing a Strat and Mike had a Jazz Bass. I believe that Page had a B-3 and Leslie for the gig ta boot.
Sadly, I was one of the only musicians in the audience that could appreciate how good this band was; there were some people dancing, drinking, smoking (etc..), but not enough. [I still kick myself for not buying some early bootlegs they had for sale on a table by the sound man.] After a while the band took a break and as I headed over to the keg line, who was behind me but Mike Gordon. For obvious reasons, I said, "Hey man, you guys are fantastic, let me get you a beer". Mike was pleased by the offer and I poured him a full 16oz draft beer. We chatted briefly (he was quiet and wanted to get back to his mates) and he walked off. The next set was kick ass and unfortunately I had to leave before they quit for the night (that's what happens when you are at the mercy of the designated driver).

Since then I have seen them many times, both at Umass over the next 2 years and in Boston -their New Years Eve gigs are classic, and enjoyed each show. But the thing that puts a smile on my face the most is when I recall Mike Gordon pumping the keg for me while I filled up his red solo beer cut at Amherst College in November, 1988. :bassist:
