Got a ticket :(

Worth the risk, I would think. Unless cops will bust you by seeing it even in your car (like in a parking lot or something).
And, as is said in other places, their value can be questionable in case of laser; BUT, they can be placed in places that can give you more help. But if you're the prime target, and speeding openly, yeah, you're cooked.
yes definitely worth the risk :ninja:

It's actually not illegal to own a detector in VA, but illegal to use it. "Use" is described as having it within reach of a power source, so basically inside the passenger compartment of a car. Not sure if they can bust you if they see it in a parked car. I always take mine down anyway; detectors are like the jackpot for thieves.

Since they have the technology to tell you're speeding it's a pity they can't prove you're sending signals from your vehicle looking for them. Then they could establish use over ownership I suppose.

Just presuming a single function device only has one function and fining the owner for having one where it may be used, and probably is, is somewhat questiobable, if there were another reason to have it. Bringing it to a friends place? Pawning it off?

They would have to question a pistol more that that! :D

Hey, argue you're on your way to a street meet at the local drags, and want to know the track equipment works on the scanner as well as the new Blower and Nitrous Kit since you're worried the brakes won't stop it street racing and need to test it on a safe legit track first :)
I'm sure they'll like that.

The officer does NOT go to your intial appearance and only has to appear if there is a trial.

In NY, there is no initial appearance, you just mail in the ticket with a plea. If you plea Not Guilty, then you go to trial. But before the individual trials start, there's a last round of offers to change pleas. If the cop doesn't show for that, it's inferred that he's not gonna be there an hour from then either. I've gotten 3 tickets thrown out this way, when cops didn't show.

They CAN. It's called VG-2, I think. I may be wrong a bit about that, but they do have them. Radar detectors do emit some radar, and these VG-2 guns do detect them. SO, they are detector detectors. Now, I have a just moderately priced Detector that detects the VG-2 detectors. SO, that'd be a detector detector detector, right?
Mine would shut down before it would ever be in range of a radar detector detector.
Problem would be if the cop made a visual on it, and then pulled me over, he'd be PO'ed.

What's the deal with these jammers and radar detectors? Is it legal to intentionally jam a cop's radar? Thus far I haven't gotten a ticket for speeding, but I frequently drive by speed traps and it terrifies me.

They don't work. Myth Busters did an episode where they tried all the Internet ideas and a couple purchased things. None of them even came close to fooling the detectors. It was, however, a rather fun episode.
On the laser side, it is illegal to shine a laser like that. Plus plus, the car would be moving, and bumping, so making it precise, even if it DID work, would be a feat of engineering costing more than, well....more than alot!!
:-)

word on the street is that radar jammers are illegal on the federal level since the FCC controls those frequencies and you need to have the proper license/permit to transmit on those freqs. Laser jammers on the other hand are legal in many states since the frequencies laser transmits on is not controlled by the FCC. I think the FDA actually holds jurisdiction over laser.

true, but that does not work in all courts: here in the New Orleans area, in a town called Kenner, a buddy of mine asked to confront his accuser; DA said "what, whoa we don't do that here, and if you pay the fine we will sweep this under a rug" :rollno: yeah we have a problem here with poor application of justice and the laws

Duly note the fact that Louisiana had its local laws heavily influenced
by the original French legal system, as opposed
to the English system. This had lead to some interesting
application and interpretation of local statues over the years.

And LA is a great place not to get arrested.

Up here in RI, some of my 'Stateeey' neighbors claim
they will not pursue at 82 (in 65 zone) but at 83+ you are on
the hook. Apparently that is enough fodder for the mill unless
they are instructed to maintain a speedtrap in certain areas.
(You can use my name, but you go to do it before he/she
heads back to the cruiser to start writing, was some advice I got.)

That being said, I have never had a break from a female cop.
Neither has anyone I know. I don't mean to be sexist here but
that has been my lifetime experience, (as I note the BS ticket
for OP came from the fairer sex). YMMV.

I once got a speeding ticket... 352 euros, I was driving 111 on an 80 area (km/h, not mph). That was an expensive trip, but I'm glad they didn't put my licence on hold. I thought the limit was 30 over for that...

Here' the tickets (fines?) are related to your income, so rich people pay in proportion as much as poorer ones. Even though it sometimes mean 100 000€ fines for millionaires... I think it's a very good system.

In California, the CHP has to keep traffic within 7 MPH of the 65 MPH limit( I think so that they receive some amount of state funding), so you are generally OK up to that point. However, they also go on ZERO TOLERANCE days (usually on holidays) where they'll get you for basically going faster than anyone else. But it is also nice here in general that unless you are really obviously doing something stupid and blowing past cars, CHP are pretty reasonable.
Now, local cops on the other hand, they can be anywhere from really cool (Roseville, Mountain View, Sunnyvale), to extreme Adam Henrys (Campbell, Rocklin sometimes). So you also have to now where you are at a given time.
Or.......as an oft-unmentioned alternative.....don't break the law.

Do you think that leads the police sometimes to let the junker cars go and focus on the nicer cars as they know they'll get more revenue?

I used to work with a lady whose husband was in law enforcement. The two things I got from her were 1) state police are the worst. Even other cops don't like them, and 2) female cops will never cut you a break. They all have a chip on their shoulder and feel like they have something to prove.

Thanks :)

The reason I didn't know that is that I didn't want or need to do the research for a practical use :)

It's comforting to know citizens are arming themselves with electronic countermeasures to avoid having to follow safety protocols as well.

Ohio has Zero tolerence for out of state speeders, ecspecially those from the maize and blue state. I have a friend who was pulled over on US 2 in 50 mph zone, he had his cruise set for fifty. The officer who pulled him over asked, do you realize how fast you were going? My friend replied he had his cruise set for fifty, the offcer replied, I clocked you at 52 son.:D

At that point, I would make a trip back and do the old,
'Let's see the calibration records' defense. Two can play
the 'Let's be a dorkhead' game. That one would become a
matter of principle.

Or maybe I would just ask Cheez for some help!

I received my first ticket in 26 years of driving last week, and it was a total BS affair.

I had to take a different route home from work that day, and the highway I was on (for only the third time) passes through some little jerkwater town. As you enter town, there's a warning sign "Speed Limit 40 Ahead," and a way up the road, the limit officially changes. I passed the warning sign and had just started to brake from the original speed limit (65) when a cop down the road facing the other direction hits his lights, waits for me to pass him, turns around, and pulls me over.

"Gotcha for 51 in a 40!"

"I'm sorry, but I wasn't in the 40 mph zone when you hit your lights."

"I say ya' was" was his reply as he smugly smacked his gum.

He then stated he was giving me "a break" by only writing me up for 5 over.

I haven't decided what to do (just pay or fight), since I'd have to drive 55 miles to go to court for a "your word against his" fight, where the cop is probably the judge's son-in-law. :spit:
