Got Chorus?

EBS Unichorus. Does chorus, pitch modulation and flanging. There is also a wet/dry pot on the pcb so you can have as much or as little as you need. Check here for samples Link Removed

I have one of these and, though they are quite well-made, the flanger is a bit underwhelming on them. I have two EBS pedals and they are definitely warm-sounding, maybe a little too "subtle" for some.

An old 80s DOD Bass Chorus is actually a pretty good pedal and can be had on the cheap. I still have mine and will keep it as a backup.

These days I use chorus from Magicstomp. Nice, noiseless and doesnt soound icy like any other digital stuff. I still have another 2 ont the bench: Maxon CS505 & Diamond Halo.
Maxon is too bright and presents some volume bump when engadged. Diamond is too subtle, nice for guitard not for bass.

analogman minichorus with deep mod. bought one, never looked back. extremely high quality, none of that muffled sound you get from most choruses. theres one other one that sounds killer, but its somewhere around $500 and i completely spaced out on the name..

ive searched for quite some time, and the analogman is the best choice..the only problem is you cant try before you buy, it comes straight from analogman.com..

Well i decided to spend the week trying out various chorus pedals from either the store or people i know that have them on their pedal boards....

Keep in mind these are all commercially available pedals under $200.00 (no boutique stuff here)

I used to own a EH Clone Theory and though i was mostly happy with it it was very noisy and didn't really handle low frequencies well especially tuned BEAD DGCF and C#F#BE (yea i play a lot of stoner metal away from the bar) so i got rid of it and never looked back, however as of late i find myself needing one for some Tool songs and a few other things i have been toying with (side project) long story short i came here looking for help....really didn't get much so off i went.

EH Small Clone and Nano Clone like the size and casing but again very noisy and with very low notes they might as well not be turned on (i have yet to use an EH pedal that i really like)

Next the Boss Family

I tried the CH1, the CE-5 and the CEB-3 in a word they were ok but they sound.... well, mechanical and over processed is the best term i can come up with and again they just don't seem to be able to deal with double and triple stops very well to my ears. Not to mention i'm not a big fan of their box design or colors although they seem well made and have a fine reputation.

Next The Digitech Family

I tried the Digitech XBC which sounds ok handles the lows a little better than the Boss pedals did but after all wasn't it designed for bass? however it sounded like somebody put a pillow over my amp basically kind of muddy though lush especially with its multi voice feature. So i moved on to the Digitech CF7 wow much better sound and a lot of tone and speed and depth options....however this was its downfall it does too many things well which meant i kept playing with the settings so much to the point that i got frustrated, and much like the boss Pedals i don't like the box design or the way you have to replace the battery (not that would use a battery) arrgghh really wanted to give up at this point.

I have decided i don't like digital

Moved on to the MXR M-134, like the housing color puts me off but that is minor. overall i liked it except that it seemed to liiterally suck tone on certain notes, and when i tried to correct for tone it also seemed to be very muddy to my ears. but overall better than anything else i tried.

but more to try....

found a Dan Electro DC-1 Cool Cat in a pawn shop...very cheesy looking nice heavy cast casing but the knobs suck and i don't like the switch. Sound was passable but it was fairly beat up and they wanted too much for it...i moved on

BBE Mind Bender....wow I'm thinking analog is the way to go cool casing, i like the box design however; it is combined with a vibrato and instead of having two stomps for each effect it only has one which you have to tap or double tap...the LEDS are bright, but one is yellow and the other green, to close in color and a pain in the backside to deal with, but it seems to handle anything i can throw at it, also nice and quiet..... made a note and set it aside (really wish it had separate controls)

Voodoo Labs Analog Chorus big fan of their Sparkle drive so what the heck.....wow again analog is the way to go can handle anything i throw at it blends well with my overdrive and fuzz i think i have found my pedal although it also seems to suck a little treble...but more to try.

EBS Uni Chorus....man you guys were not kidding it sounds quite lush maybe too lush to my ears it does not sound as good as the Mind Bender with my gear and current set up. I like the color, casing, and switch, also with its features it like having three pedals in one and much easier to switch between features than the Mind Bender. This has just become more difficult but will i ever use the pitch modulation or the flange?

Dunlop Uni Vibe Stereo Chorus- Overall i like this pedal the most. It sounds alot like the Mind Bender and the Voodoo labs pedal...i like the features cost, casing, and controls better than anything else i tried so far.

I have a lot of thinking and playing to do but i think the Dunlop is the winner so far...

a few more to try will keep you posted

Anyone get that Jaco Pastorius' Continuum sound using any of the chorus pedals previously mentioned? I realize alot of his tone in that song was probably due to his fretless bass but it sounds like there's definitely some chorus on there as well, though I might be wrong.

I have a DOD bass Chorus from either the lat 80s or early 90s. I have had it so long I forget. I replaced it last night with the Analogman standard chorus with the deep toggle and what a difference. It is miles apart from the DOD.

I just bought a EBS Uni-Chorus. You get solid effect on all strings including a low B. It lets the tone of the bass come through ( adjustable) instead of covering it with a thick blanket of effect. It's great "transparent" chorus.

Interesting, when I asked about this pedal someone responded that it didn't work well on bass.

Yeah, I read that thread and was a little surprised since my experience was the opposite. He mentions preferring the ChoralFlange and while it does sound sweet, it didn't seem to work with my lower than E notes very well. Different strokes? Likely. Different basses/rigs? Absolutely. Different technique/ears? Yet another factor. Oh yeah, I'll give a shout out for the Ibanez/Maxon CS-9 while I'm at it. I've been torn between that and the Meistersinger recently. I'll be doing an A/B test with my guitarist's CS-9 soon to settle the score :bassist:

I can actually get it with the BOSS CEB-3, which sounds great with harmonics btw.

From the sound samples I heard on the boss site, the CEB-3 sounds a little too icy for my taste. I'm thinking about maybe getting the analogman minichorus with the deep mod. I see at least two people in this thread have recommended it and I love that jazzy sound sample on their site although that doesn't say with deep mod. To those who have this pedal:

1. Do the highs still get a nice warm sound that's almost like Jaco's sound in Continuum or is it worth it to get the standard sized pedal with the toggle switch instead for more versatility?

2. Is the optional internal mix trimpot or knob a necessity or pretty unnecessary?

Any sound samples would really help out as the analogman site is pretty limited on bass sound samples.

Thanks alot!

Edit: Also, how're the chorus-type sounds on the modulation delay setting on the boss dd-7?

I just got my MXR M-134 Stereo Chorus in the mail today and so far I am loving it. Gorgeous sound and the bass filter switch is ever so helpful. However, I have no reference point to other hardware chorus effects so take it for what you want...
I will try to post an indepth review in a couple of days.
