Got my new amp (Phil Jones!)

How's Briefcase life going?

I'm now realising that I do have a good reason to get one - it's a pain having to plug in my big rig (SWR GP/QSC PLX3002/Acme Low-B2s) whenever I want to practice electrically at home, plus it'd be nice to have a little amp that's more suitable for small jams and jazzier thangs, and I want the amp to have a transparent a sound as possible (i.e. sounding like my big Acme rig).

The only other options appears to be either AI Contra or Clarus/Focus + Epi UL110/Acme Low-B1, all of which are bigger and more expensive.

Is PJB definitely the way to go?

Well, the PJB continues to amaze people who hear it. The amount of sound out of that little box seems to defy the laws of physics. I've used the PJB at a Blues gig, and it did the job admirably considering the size of the room.

Here's a short sample of my first Bongo recorded through the PJB with the controls on the Phil Jones set flat:

The EQ is voiced pretty well, but I don't really find myself using it. I'm getting the sound I want just by using the EQ on my basses. I like the optical compressor, too, but I tend to use it at a very low setting.

As a practice amp, I don't think the PJB can be beat for the price. You simply won't find a better sound with the portability you get from the Briefcase. When I use it with my upright, or my ABG, I keep thinking that it's not doing anything. Of course, that quickly proves untrue when I turn it down and I see just how much louder it was making my bass.

I still haven't bought a battery for it, and an opportunity to play it outdoors hasn't arisen, but it would certainly be able to hang with any acoustic guitars/mandolins/fiddles/harmonicas/etc if that was something that you are likely to do.

That said, I am toying with the idea of selling my Briefcase in an attempt to downsize my musical gear investment. So, if you want one, you can probably get one for a little cheaper than new if you shoot me a PM while I consider my options.
