Double Bass Grace Design's ALiX

I'm assuming it will be @ half the cost of the Felix. Same great features much more affordable. I'm likely to eventually purchase one as a backup.

Ric

Yeah: Half the cost!

I have used, and could see myself using more often, a HPF and a notch filter at the same time, which is the Alix is not capable of but the Felix is capable of. (Is that correct?)

How often do you guys use a HPF and a notch filter? I do have a fDeck III and a Broughton Audio H/LPF and both work just terrific with my FC pickup, so that could be an option with the Alix.

Actually you cannot apply both notch and HPF to the same channel on the Felix. You can have a notch on one channel and a HPF on the other. The HPF is so accurate and sensitive that I use it just to slightly rase the low end cuttoff frequency. I've never had the need to switch the HPF over to a notch. This preamp is like no other, it's like running your bass into a studio channel strip.

Thanks!

But you're not helping my GAS. Or my PayPal slush fund!

12v would power an ATM350... hmm.

Vin*tone,
Well, once again chances are even a 12volt phantom would require extra circutry and also raise the cost. Just spitballin' here that if they were going to put in phantom power, Grace
would likely go for 48 volt as their company's business is based on recording studio products. The Grace is their move over to live sound. We can always dream though. Just my take.

ALiX has 12v phantom, FELiX has 48v, no extra re-engineering required! Cool beans, IMO.

Has anyone compared the sound quality of Felix/Alix to a headway?

I've been really liking my new fishman plat-pro ( way better than the older model) but curious about grace and headway as the next step up.

I own both, as does Cataphonic. The Headway is nice, especially considering it's size and price. I haven't touched mine since I got the Felix, the tone is just pristine. If the AleX is comparable in price to the EDB-2, it would be a my choice. Grace backs their products with a four year warranty.

I wrote a review of the Felix for Bass Gear magazine (issue out soon). Both are very nice units, but the Felix offers more control and is about 3 times the size of the EDB-2. It's also built like a tank and to my ears is a sharper knife with a more detailed sound. Think of the EDB-2 as a Toyota Corolla and the Felix as a Lexus sedan. Both are great cars, but one is pretty basic and one is a luxury model. I liked the sound of the Felix a lot but given what I do, half of the features or more would go unused. on my gigs. The Alix looks more my speed and I look forward to trying one out.

A post on the FELiX thread, about phantom power, sent me to the FELiX manual.

FELiX can provide 48v to CH1 MIC (XLR) input, and/or 12v to the LINE 2 input (Ring, on a TRS connector), or 12v to the LINE1 and LINE2 inputs. Flexible!

No XLR (MIC) input on the ALiX, so no 48v. 12v would be on RING, on the LINE of the ALix.
