I agree. In practice, though, the simultaneous changes in tone and coil splitting made it difficult to use any subtleties offered by the gradual split. I've found it much more effective to split the T-40's coils with a push-pull switch and use a conventional tone knob setup. The OP's original example offers independent control over both the variable split and tone, which is nice.

I agree for the most part- I happen to like the different tone offered by a humbucker sometimes, but would likely want the Tone cranked much of the time when using the bucker settings.
