You 'feel' he got screwed? If you know the story of their band you would KNOW he and the whole band got royally screwed by their manager who belonged in jail! I also don't think Mark gives a C$&p about we're an American Band cuz they had a million better songs and were a million x's more popular in all the years before that song came out. Don Brewer sang it too. It's cool you know him. Is he still a Christian? After watching this you'll wish you could go back in time and punch their manager in the face!Rockmusician said:

Know what the saddest thing about that whole Terry Knight thing was? Their contract was about to expire in 3 months when the suits started flying, and they could have at least gotten away without being found in breach of their contract. Instead, it ended up costing them a fortune. Man, they really took a beating in court. That had to suck.
People say, 'Sally' and 'Bad Time' are too pop for Grand Funk, but I think they are great songs.
Man, for Knight to show up at their gig with Marshalls (the police kind) to take all their gear and instuments after getting 10 of their 16 percent of their profit for all those years really is greedy. A good manager would've let them in on the facts without them having to come to him to demand what was going on. Money is the root of ALL evil and corupts people.
Where did they play? I live in Cincy and didn't know about this show. I love some of the old GFR basslines like Closer to Home, TNUC, Outside Looking In, and many others. I would have loved to see them.
Inside Looking Out is the name. I remember seeing them live in thw early 70's and these two girls in front of us getting so turned on by that song they turned around to us and propositioned us. lol. How could I forget that nite.iridiumrocks said:

Grand Funk "We're an American Band" was one of the first albums that I purchased as a teen. Thanks for sharing the pics!
They played at Bechtold Park at some Sycamore community festival. Ambrosia played the night before, but I didn't make that one.
I'm rather impressed with the number of responses to this thread. For those who missed the GFR appearance, Mark Farner will be appearing near Dayton, Ohio (Kettering) at the Fraze Pavilion later in August with a number of other acts.

I went to last year's hippifest there and had a great time. Not only the music (War and Badfinger headlined) but seeing all the "old hippies" in their hippie attire (some with wigs
) in attendance was a show in itself.I witnessed Farner's "solo" act a few years ago at another festival in Cincinnati, and thoroughly enjoyed it. He played more of the earlier GFR songs than the current GFR group did. With Mark singing the vocals and playing his guitar, it sounded more like the original songs, and I didn't really miss Don and Mel that much as his bassist and drummer did the songs justice.
Speaking of how Terry Knight screwed the band, what goes around comes around. He met an untimely death a few years ago when he was murdered by his daughter's boyfriend.
Just bragin', we've got Mark Farner's 2nd guitarist, Arnie Viches from his post GFRR band playin with us . . . great dude and player!
Hey there is Bruce Kulick, one of my fav guitar players. Wish he was still in KISS instead of Tommy. As far as Grand Funk's music. I always thought they had some cool bass lines!!!

The "gold" vinyl edition was the VERY first album I ever bought. I saved my allowance. I remember to this day it was $5.05 with tax.
that's cool, I'll be there. I saw them last year and got to hang out with Mel for a couple hours before and after the show...what a nice guy!
I also am a huge GFRR fan from their beginnings. A couple weeks ago caught Mark Farner and band at the Mohegan Sun casino in CT. Very good show with many classic Grand Funk tunes. His voice is still strong and the band did a good job of covering Don and Mel. I agree 100% that GFRR without Mark doesn't cut it. The crowd was huge and of all ages - even though it was a Sun. night - and seemed to really love the show. Yes, love Mel's bass playing.

My first real concert was GFR and Bloodrock in Dania Fla about 1970. I bought the 1st three albums and learned every song on them. Mel's sound is etched in my mind and I have never even come close to it. On the other hand Grand Funk now is not even close to what Grand Funk should be without Farner. I saw him a couple years ago and was amazed he hadn't lost any of his vocal ability and I think he is a better guitarist now than back in the day.
