Grateful Dead: Without a Net

I downloaded it off of iTunes for the iPod. I'm the type of guy that prefers Dick's Picks and other Soundboard recordings over AUD bootlegs. The SBD quality sounds like happy, and is worth paying for IMO.

Anyway, I picked it up because I was jonesin to hear some Feel Like a Stranger. I was pleasantly surprised at some of the gems on this record. (not one show, but a collection of live tunes from 1989-1990).

I think Eyes of the World is my new favorite GD song. This version features Branford Marsalis. Help on the Way>Slipknot>Franklin's Tower is good, not the best I've ever heard, but good (I like Dick's Picks Vol 17 for this suite). I'm also stoked on China Cat>I Know You Ryder. I haven't heard many China Cat Sunflowers better executed, than this one IMO.

I'm glad I picked this one up.

For sure It's been out for a while, but I've just discovered these recordings (as well as GD in general ) and thought I'd share.

If you are new to GD and have only heard the standards; Truckin, Casey Jones, etc., this recording is definitely worth a listen

Without A Net has always been one of my favorite live Dead albums. Some people don't dig Garcia's playing on it, but I think Lesh sounds great.

I love 'Without a Net,' especially since it features some great '89 and spring tour '90- the best Dead after the 70s, IMHO.

If you're into the 'Eyes...,' I highly recommend getting the rest of the show (3.29.90). You can stream the SBD on archive.org.

The vocals (and possibly other instruments) are frequently overdubbed on their live albums from Europe '72 on. This is a controversial topic for some Deadheads, but it make 'Net' a great listen.

If you're into a high quality, non-dubbed release, try 'Go to Nassau.' It's amazing.

I meant no criticism whatsoever by my comment. I was just saying that I think that album is great. I literally listened to nothing else for at least a few weeks after purchasing it.

I saw most of the songs/shows used for that album live. Those were great years for the Dead, probably the last great era of music for them IMO. I could listen to that Althea all day.

Good album. Good tone. Good example of the Dead. That was my first CD of the group. It may or may not be interesting to know, but it was through this single album that I realized I had to change/fix my left technique to one finger per fret.

MY band, Cosmic Railroad, plays in the 1974 Grateful Dead style. A lot of our cover tunes were inspired from the Without a Net era. Jerry and Bobby were really on their game at the time. There are ton's of places you can get dead stuff for free. This is what the band stood for. While they are playing it, it is there, when they are done playing, "We are done with it" (Jerry Garcia) and that is how they turned into the band they are. Pay to see them, listen to the music for free.

My first thoughts too, I love that Althea. Cassidy is great too, Cina Cat/I Know You Rider... Franklin's Tower, it's aaall good Without a Net, coupled with Europe '72, got me into the Dead.
