Metro St. Louis
I had to run some errands for my wife today and I went by GC since was the neighborhood and took my Modern to play through a killer Bergantino cab at the store. My Modern sounded fantastic. The bridge pickup soloed had fantastic bottom, but this post is not about gear. An older man with a small frame came with a Peavey wrapped tightly in a trash bag. I spoke to him came over to me and bumped fists. He asked to play the Sadowsky Metroline I was playing and he plucked the strings so hard that it sound like the amp had been turned up five notches. He said he had been playing many years. I hate criticize because my skill set is so modest, but was not an impressive player, but loved music so much, it was contagious! Music and the bass clearly gave him joy and it made me happy for him.

He took out a box cutter and cut his knife out the heavily taped trash bag. It was a Peavey Milestone that had seen better days. The jack was completely gone and the nut was paper and tape holding his strings in place. He wanted a complete rehab for his bass.

I was lifted by his love of music and the bass. It made me happy to see how much he loved music.

Compared to somebody, we've all got a modest skill set. Just today I began to learn a song featuring one of my absolute favorite bassists - who is an absolute monster on the bass. (Not sure what took me 25 years to start this one...) I learned the entire song in about two runs through. Needs a little polishing, but I could likely play it close enough most people would never notice anything. This isn't to brag on my skills, which are also rather modest, but just to point out that there are plenty of amazing songs that only require modest skills. This was one of them. I'll likely never be able to play some of his lines. It's about the culmination of all the band members working together to make something that is greater than the sum of their parts.

But this isn't about our skills (or lack thereof). I think we've all been there - the excitement keeps us going, no matter our skill set. If we don't get excited about learning a new song/technique/whatever, what are we even doing? I wish everyone was enthusiastic as the man you met, and I'd happily jam with someone whose enthusiasm is greater than their skill. Heck - that's me most of the time! I hope this man keeps playing for many years and brings himself and his friends all the joy he possibly can.

Their are a boatload of us who love Music many also love playing yes some better than others

For decades I listened to Music a minimum of 2 to 4 hours a day
Have thousands of LP's hundreds of CD's and dozens of Concert DVD's

I also went to lots of Concerts live and always went to see local bands when I was free

Just a thought - Compared to his Milestone your Sadowsky Modern was probably significantly different (easier) to play - he probably has to dig in that hard to make the Milestone sound out at all ,and didn't adjust to your Modern well.

So cool that you let him play your Modern, too! Hopefully GC can get his Milestone playing really well for him for less than a new Milestone, much less a Modern, would cost! Anyone that in love with making music should have the means to do it!

Full Disclosure: My Modern was already in its bag when he came inside. I was playing a used Metroline JJ4.
