Great luthiers with bargain prices?

at the risk of hijacking the thread (let me know if this is inappropriate and i'll delete this post), are there any particular luthiers who can duplicate/clone a specific neck and body? the names mentioned in the previous posts appear to build their specific brand/model basses with tweaks suggested by their clients/bassists.

i'm just basically looking for a luthier who can clone a neck or body and assemble the bass (i would provide all the parts, pickups, and hardware).

thanks for any help or suggestions!

The Psilos Bass he built for Mick the Greek was last week's No Treble bass of the week.

For that he cloned the neck from one of Mick's SGC Nanyo Bass Collection basses. Adrian Maruszczyk will also under take the same work,friend of mine wanted an exact copy of an old Westone Thunder neck.

i'm here in california. thanks for the suggestion. should have probably mentioned that a luthier in the continental u.s. might be preferred to avoid any weirdness with all the international shipping restrictions on materials and such (not sure one way or the other... ). thanks for your help!

Gotta take a look at Wendler Electrocoustic.

He's got a basic shape and headstock that he sticks with but he hand carves every body and neck. Further he does every neck shape and dimensions to the individual prefferences of the buyer for no additional charge! The tone from the passive MagPi system definitely leans toward upright/acoustic/P-bass. This is not a modern sounding instrument, but it sounds great and the carved (front and back) cedar body results in a total weight of less than 6 pounds!

All this for $1200! That's ridiculously bargain basement for such a nice handmade instrument. I can't think of anyone else doing something so unique and quality for anywhere near this kind of money.

I paid a bit more (around $1450) for sunburst, an elongated body and a 35" scale. and am really happy with the results. You can read my review here:

Here's mine next to my P-bass. I specified a wide 1.75" nut with a rather flat radius and farily shallow neck shape, based on my Carlo.

still researching potential luthiers for two future projects. just thought i'd bump this to see if anyone has a line on a favorite builder (continental u.s. preferred). here's a pic on one of my future builds. basically need a body based on my diagram. all parts will be provided by me. thanks for any help!

If it's just the body you require I reckon there must be any number of wood workers who'd do the work. Tidy up your drawing and get it converted to .dxf. If the shop doesn't have a CNC machine they can then get an MDF template laser cut from it. After that it's a simple task to cut the shape with a router.

Or have I got this wrong and you want them to assemble it too.

What you are asking for doesn't sound complicated. Keith can build you a custom body or neck from scratch, working from your pencil layouts and parts. No need for CNC or computer model-driven machines.

Japanese builders like Atelier Z, Bacchus/Momose, Dragonfly and others are much more competitively priced compared to their US counterparts. They actually tend to deliver on time too.

I'll add another shout out to ACG guitars in the UK. Alan does amazing work. I have no idea how he keeps his prices as low as he does. Strong dollar/weak pound helps a lot for us here in the US.

yeah, would like them to put her together. i'd also be providing a body for reference. that way one could see what the dimensions of the tummy cut, forearm rest, depth of body, etc. would be.

be nice if there was a laundry list of luthiers one could pick from. make things easier!
