I'm new to the bottom end. I've played rhythm guitar for a while with a a buddy. One night he ran into the other room and came back with a bass. He said PLAY THIS! You're a bass player. Turns out he was right. I asked Santa for a bass for Xmas and he delivered a Squire bass and Rumble 15 amp. I've been playing for a little over six months now and won't look back. Next investment will be an amp upgrade and a P-bass if I stumble across a great deal. Happy on the bottom and digging the groove.

There's a lot of bass gear in there for sure... both new and used. They are a Quilter dealer for new. Really interesting stuff.

It's pretty much two sides to the store.... Guitar Pickers and Bass Pluckers. So if you know a guiyar player who would want to ride along he/she could enjoy it too.

Nice guys. The bass guy (forgot his name) could sit and talk bass stuff all day.

Prices seem fair enough for a mom n pop but not incredible. I haven't tried to negotiate with them so I don't know if there is any "wiggle room" in their pricing.

I wouldn't drive the hour and a half one way to go to that store alone, but there are plenty of good restaurants, bars and beaches that would make the day trip worthwhile anyway.

I usually swing by on the way to or from Topsail a couple times a year because it's not that far off of my path.

Thanks, I'll do that. I'm not sure how long it usually takes to start gigging but I'm sure that after six months I'm not there yet.

How long to start gigging depends on the type of music you will be playing. Jazz will take a couple of years. Dirt simple three chord songs can be done when your rhythm kicks in and you know where those three chords roots' are located on your fret board. Find them in first position, aka the first 5 frets of your fret board.

Listen to your music and clap the rhythm, when you are clapping with the beat pick up your bass and see if you can follow the chord's roots. I use fake chord sheet music for this.

I play with a buddy and can work my way around the fretboard pretty well. I started an online course right after i got the bass and it's a combination of technique and music theory. Playing the roots, fifths, chord tones, octaves and such are ok. Maybe I'm farther along than I think. My buddy just keeps telling me I'm not doing enough. Maybe I need a new buddy. ;-)

My only complaint with the Squire was with the finish and setup. The fretboard is not finished very well. I'll be taking some emery boards to it to smooth out the rough edges. I had it back to the dealer to get it setup a couple times. It was just never right and I was getting frustrated. I finally just did a setup start to finish on my own. Playing like a dream now.

I live a little more inland now but lived at the beach for a couple decades. Did a Craig's List deal and met the seller at the Tiger Mart in Longs a year or two ago. Bought a beautiful Squier vm jazz for a bargain.
