Hello TalkBass, I'm Lucky Hands and I'm actually a trumpeter from New Jersey. I primarily play in jazz ensembles as well as church. My inspiration to play trumpet, to persue music, and to be myself regardless of others' opinions was Miles Davis. So why then am I on a site for bassists?
I'm planning to learn bass guitar soon and I feel that I can gain invaluable insight from you experienced bassists on here about all aspects of electric bass playing, the history, recommended listening, pedadogy, etc. While I feel the trumpet is my definitive musical voice, I would like to be able to suffice on bass in between trumpet gigs; preferably playing funk and R&B songs within my grasp. I know the fretboard from fiddling around with guitars so it would just be a matter of building technique and ability.
I also compose and though I don't play bass (yet), I've been told that I have a nack for writing very funky basslines. Honestly it would be nice to be able to be the one playing MY basslines for once lol! The electric bassists that I most admire are Bootsy Collins, Nathan East, Larry Graham, Michael Henderson, Michael Logan, James Jamerson, Darryl Jones, Marcus Miller, Raphael Saddiq, and Verdine White.
P.s. What's a good and affordable brand of student bass and decent amp to buy? Thanks!
