Groove 101

I got this book a few weeks ago and I think it will really improve my playing. There is a lot of emphasis on note length, dynamics and playing at different tempos. Heck the first groove, although simple, is kicking my a$$. Trying to play that at 50 bpm is still eluding me after a couple of weeks of trying.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve timing and be where they're suppose to be in the groove. I've studied a lot of great books, but this one seems the best for teaching me how to be bassist. It's a bit pricey, but well worth the investment.

even before i started playing bass lot's i always noticed that the players that sounded the best had very specific and great feeling note lengths within the groove! it definately matters and it's quite subtle.

Thank you very much for these kind words. You actually pointed out the aspects that are so important to bass playing and I try to put them in form of exercises and lessons with all the tools you need to achieve it in all my books and teaching.
I too think it is the best book on the subject and considering it comes with a dvd data packed with over 1,000 mp3 tracks to practice with you've got all the tools needed to improve your playing no matter what level you're at!

Hi All,

I'd consider myself leaving "complete beginner", and starting to enter "early intermediate" level. I bought Friedland's book Bass Grooves and it's not really what I expected. Perhaps I need a bit more experience, but actually I was looking for something a little less ethereal and a bit more comprehensive. (Frankly, I was also a bit bugged by the concept that singing improves your groove. By far, I consider dancing to be much more closely connected to the groove - so that just tells you something about me.)

The Groove 101 book perhaps sounds a bit more of what I was expecting - especially with more than 1000 MP3 examples.

Can anyone please give a bit more detailed summary of what the book offers? This will most likely help me decide to purchase now, or perhaps wait until I have a bit more experience.

Hi there,
I believe this is the best and may be the only tool on the market to improve your groove,timing and inner clock with a truly professional approach. The book has everything you need, starting with some basic theory, groove elements and notation info. The grooves are separated into 4 sections: 8th notes, swing 8th notes and triplets, 16th notes and 16th notes swing with different percentages of swing. There are more then 260 exercises and grooves. Every groove is recorded as a demo and the specific drum track. Then there are about 3 to 5 different tempos of drums tracks for each groove to lock with.

seytonyah, thanks for resurrecting this topic. After reading these posts and checking out the examples on the website, I just ordered my copy. I sure hope I can follow the material. I am basically a beginner but have been playing in a classic rock cover band for 2 years. Seems like material I can really use to progress as a player.
