Gross necks

So the finish on the back of my bass has collected enough sweat and grime to bother me.

I assume taking the finish off the back of the neck would get this done with, anyone got any suggestions?

I know one of the guitarists for shadows fall has his custom guitars made with no finish to the back of the bass

I have never liked any finish on the back to my necks. My hands will get really sweaty and then I can't anchor with my thumb because it keeps slipping.

I have always taped off the fretboard, where it meets the neck wood. Then just use steel wool to slowly scrape away the finish. Start with a course wool and then move up to finer wools. You can get all types of steel wool at Home Depot or lowe's.

If you like the finish and just want to get off the grime. Ammonia works well. Pour some on a rag and just clean away all the junk. Don't soak the rag, just moisten it. Ammonia stinks and you don't want any to soak into any wood, you just want enough to clean.

Before you start removing the finish, would not a bit of cleaning with a mild detergent be worthwhile?

You jest, I'm sure.

I think that 99% of the time keep abrasives and guitars separate!!

First try cleaning with Goo Gone, Lighter Fluid (naptha), WD40, or a similar cleaner - often that will solve the issue.
