Overall, I agree on the overall response that Corvette's have more growl than most Jazzes, but I don't think it gets more growly than 60's jazzes with the Alder body. Just my two cents.

Growl Factor: Warwick Corvette VS. Fender Jazz

To me, growl is pronounced mids, especially in the lower mid range. Based on that definition, the Warwick is the growliest. I have played a J and a Corvette and hands down, without a doubt, the Warwick has more of it.
On side note, if you pick closer to the bridge, you'll get more growl out of almost any bass.

i love both of my basses (both lefties). the fender (or sears craftsman bass, as Thor calls it) can growl like a tiger, but it isn't as ballsy as my warwick. the winner is the warwick (although it doesn't have ovankol/wenge necks).
my ears like the tone and sound of the warwick a little better now. the mim fender's have very, very thin necks. maybe if i get a thicker warmoth neck, i may get a little more tone; i don't know and i'm sure thats up to debate. the fender can have the old school sound if i want it, the warwick can't do that. both are slap monsters (tonewise). the 6 is very hard for me to slap, the jazz is easy to slap. when i have the warwick in 5 string mode, it is so fun to slap, 'cause the neck and other bridge are the "wide versions" - more than 3/4" string spacing at the bridge.

I had one of the gorgeous flamed Proline 6ers and it sounded great, but...
Its gone and I've still got my trusty J's. For me, the passives have far more growl.
Maybe what is meant by growl is a generational thing.

NJL your determination sounds like the most thought out to me. I don't own nor play a warwick. I play a MIM Jazz and love it for what I play. I am not sure what the warrick sounds like but if you say it got more growl I say I agree. I still don't know the definition of growl but I am closer thanks to you.

Growl isn't limited to basses. You can get growl by playing the bottom few notes of a piano, particularly a grand. It's that "ticking" effect from very notes. The larger the grand piano, the greater the growl.
It's got nothing to do with frets, and I don't think growl on a bass has anything to do with frets, because you can get growl on a fretless, or even by playing an open "B" on a fretted.

i don't want to confuse any one and this is only my little opinion, but i noticed when i bring up the highs on my basses, it does help with the growl factor. i used to never, ever, ever, ever use any highs on my EQ's, now it makes my basses come alive.

Do you consider growl to be somehting that makes you more able to cut throguh or less able to cut through? (I would assume the obvious...more able, but it's all opinion)

Definitely the warwick. I've played Corvette's and own a Thumb and they both have great growly tone. They cut through much better too. I can even make the Thumb sound very similar to a fretless during our slower songs, it's a ton of fun to play.
On a side note, I brought my Ibanez EDC700 instead of the Thumb to practice a few weeks ago just for the heck of it, and I was amazed at the tone (and playability) difference.
Ric's have a good tone too, but it's more of a bright high-end tone vs. growl to me. I do love the Ric's though.
