Growliest Fender Jazz for under $900

Well unfortunately only the latest generation of CIJ Jags come with decent Alnico pickups. All the earlier ones came with the same basic pickup as you'd find in an Affinity Squire. So it depends on what year yours is.

I'd get a used American fender jazz. I see them on CL all the time for around $800. Try to shoot for an '08 or newer. Then grab a dirt pedal as suggested above.

dirt pedal. Sort of makes me sad that now you have to have devices that almost deliver the sound you could get out of a slightly overdriven tube amp.

~$600 for a MIM Jazz Standard, ~$200-250 for a SansAmp of some ilk...money left for strap and cable. I mean, a Cool Vibe will do it too, save 200 bucks. EDIT: Even have a few bucks for the setup, which is basically everything.

True or not, I like the stock pickups in the earlier Jaguars quite a bit. They are quite lively, have sounded good in 3 different basses, and respond very well to string changes. They are actually one of the better sounding jazz pickups I have personally used. And I have used some stuff that was supposed to sound pretty good.

I don't know if GC does international sales, but if they do, get a used Geddy Lee from http://used.guitarcenter.com/usedgear/index.cfm. Keyword - "Geddy", Category - "Bass". I just checked and they have 3 ranging from $550 to $600, plus one with EMGs for $800. Buy one of the stock ones, have it shipped to your home (that'll be a wallet whack), and slap on a set of Rotosound Route 66 stainless bass strings.

Or find one local, and put on those strings.

I played a mass pile of jazzes the other day and the one which has the best tone at the moment is the American Special. It must be the older 08-11 pickups, or the greasebucket tone control. But there's something really special about the... Special.

If no one has mentioned them, a used Hwy One or Hwy 1, can be had for cheap these days. I absolutely love my Hwy One and it can get PLENTY growly if I want it to.

Thanks for the input everyone, but as I mentioned above, I just bought (waiting for it to arrive) a brand new Fender Jaguar (made in Japan) for only 1/3 of the price, brand new.
And I was wondering whether the Jag's 70 stock pups will do the trick (& in conjunction with the 70's spacing) or need to be changed right away.
