growly rock bass

im kinda looking for a bass that has a good growly tone, think rickenbacker, but cheaper

just throw suggestions at me since il be trying a bunch out anyway

budget is sorta £500 ish, but go ahead and suggest higher, i could probably skip eating for a few months if i like it enough

oh and passive or active, which is better suited? (even though i know what the differences are suppost to be, i can never really tell the difference)

Get a P/J bass. Best of both worlds, and nice and growly. Definitely passive.

I would go with a fender jazz

the P bass is warmer and fatter sounding, the jazz is full of growl and punch

i always liked the look of this, but have never had a chance to try it, the pickups are similar to the jazz ones, i forget the name. simiar sound?

Definition of Growly? Spector. In your price range, try a Legend. Very nice basses.

I wouldn't consider a Ric as a growly bass, my MIA Jazz growls like a you wouldn't believe and some.

I second the SB-2 suggestion. Used Tribby's go for 350 to 400 bucks.

I got to play a fellow TB'ers SB-2 and it was incredible.

Growl it has, I would look into finding a used SB-2 Tribute.

Maybe. When I compared my SRX505 to a stingray, the ibanez had nothing on the ray in terms of growl.

I say spector or stingray. You will definitely be able to find them if you look. Theyre not rare.

Try a MIM jazz bass, I got mine for $450 (that's including gig bag and warranty), it's got a great tone and was set up very well. You should easily be able to get one for under £500.
