Ok - that seals it, no Fump for me. That's what I was afraid of.

I wonder what the developers were imagining with this: did they want to create a replication of the classic P bass mute/muted tone or were they going for something new? Seems to me that if they wanted to former that they would've used similar foam to get a similar result...

Or maybe I'm just over-thinking this whole thing. I've been searching for a cool flip-on/flip-off solution to mute my P with for a while (I like gadgets and shoving foam under the strings doesn't exactly give me what I want - I'd like to be able to switch it on and off mid-song as I do with my Hipshot D-tuner) and the options are slim pickings.

So how would you palm mute,not using the thumb,with the typical two fingered plucking technique?

That would put your fingers at a strange angle.
Not to mention inhibiting quick right hand movements.

Oh man, what next, this is garbage.

I agree, a gimmick that replaces skill and technique. What happens when you forget your "palm mute" at home. Just learn how to mute with your palm - not a piece of plastic. That's fine for Bubby to promote because he's getting paid to do it.

Neither Gary Willis or Hadrien Feraud have any issues with making quick right hand movements when muting. Carol Kaye uses a pick so yeah, I can understand the foam mute under the bridge.

Nah, it wasn't bad technique, Tony was compensating for being born without palms. At the time of that recording, palm replacement surgery had not been approved for anything other than cases where it was deemed life threatening. He's since gotten the implants, and they look - and sound fantastic.

Seriously guys - why does the development of a new tool immediately make it a crutch for "weak" players? You want to use your palm - use it! You want to use a mute - use it! Just because someone wants something different than you doesn't immediately mean that they suck or need to learn proper technique.

Don't rain on the parade - just skip the thread and troll someone else.

Two reasons, really. First, his pickup cover was in the way, and second, James was born with a hook (which is also why he was unable to remove the cover).

And speaking of crutches, what's with trombone players and toilet plungers? Any real trombonist worth his salt would use his face to mute his bone!

This ^^^^ exactly. All "real" trombonists have excellent face technique.

Can you comment on the type of foam they used in the Fump? In the video you could hear the foam scrape against the strings as he put it on and it sounded like a harder, more plasticky foam than that on the Bassmute. Thoughts?

It's like a thin base of dense foam like what you would put under a pickup, or like a pool noodle, maybe 1 mm, then the surface that touches the strings is like the loop side of Velcro.

Personally.If I palm mute,it is sporadic use.
Not full songs.Small sections.
So I wouldn't need this.

But if you play whole songs muted.......
