Guidance please...

Hi all, first post here. I'm hoping you can send me in the right direction for something very basic...such as learning how to properly play bass. I started "playing" bass about 12 years ago. My friends played guitar, and I decided I'd play bass. I fell in love with the instrument, but I tried to take so many short cuts in learning that I feel I never properly learned the craft of playing bass. From the principles of the instrument, to rudimentary skills, etc...I just tried to learn songs and a scale to jam with. Does anyone have a good recommendation on where to go to really learn the right way? And a free option is ideal Thanks!

Learn the modes. Every different one expresses a theme, an emotion. It's like the alphabet.

Always use a metronome.

Play with as many other musicians as you can in as many genres as you can. Try to find musicians who are better at what they do than you are at what you do. Most importantly, listen. Listen to what they are doing and play to accentuate it and to glean musical ideas for your own later use.

Find situations where you aren't sure that you will be able to pull it off then make yourself do it. Push your boundaries. Screw the comfort zone.

Just studying things on your own will only take you so far. Playing with others moves you forward faster.

I've been tempted to get the Roy Vogt's Teach Me Bass Guitar. I've heard a lot of good things about it and he chimes in here regularly with plenty of useful knowledge.
