Buying something like that is not recommended for newbies. Go to a man with decades of experience and pay what you must to get a good instrument.

The worst thing about buying a Squier, or any such instrument, is not the tone of the wood. It’s that the quality control varies a lot. That’s true on every part of the instrument.

If you buy the cheapest instrument you will either fix it up or sell it and buy a better one. Those are the only two paths forward. They’re both expensive but one takes longer.

As someone who hasn't shopped for a Fender style instrument in decades, what the heck am I looking at? It looks like the neck doesn't belong to this body, am I right?

I think it's just the odd angle that the photo was taken from, which makes the (nearer) headstock appear too large and the (farther) body appear too small.
