Guitar Center Nightmare

I live in Rhode Island and I deal with that GC all the time and have never had any problems with them over any item or any deal since my first deal in 2004. I will say that I've never bought anything used from them but I'd be interested in knowing the person or persons you dealt with. If you want to tell me that, give me a PM. I'm really sorry to hear you had so much trouble with them but I'm really glad you got your money back without any hassle.
If we hadn't learned that lesson already, we have now about not buying something that we can't see in person. Although as stated GC really does have a bullet-proof return policy and it worked for you. I ordered a Squier VM P-bass from that same GC last Saturday and it's coming in tomorrow but I'm not that worried about having any problems like you were unfortunate enough to have. This is a brand-new item and by law GC cannot open the box 'till I do it myself. I really didn't want to order something sight unseen but there were no used ones in the whole GC chain and there were none anywhere local for me to go and play so I took a chance. I'm really not expecting much but from what I've heard of the new Squier instruments being of amazing quality, I'm really looking forward to getting this bass in my hands. My only real concern is the weight of the bass. But if it doesn't work out for any reason, I'll have it shipped back and exchange it for another one and try again.

That is unfortunate about your experience. It is used gear, however you would of though GC would of been more honest and professional about it. It's good the other store took care of you though, perhaps they could sell it as a damaged piece for someone looking to get a 8x10 for cheap that needs a little work and TLC. Other than encountering some very know-it-all and smug employees at my local store, I have yet to have a bad experience with GC in general. There always seems to be a few bad apples in the bunch.

you were smart to have it shipped to the store instead of your house so the employees at said store could see the exact shape the thing arrived in. This is the key when ordering used from GC......You AND the GCers get to see the product the minute it comes out of the package so if there are any problems it can be solved right there and money refunded.

Dude, I don't want to sound harsh and I'm on your side.......

I've posted about buying equipment through the mail-I'd say the odds of it being not what you want are 50%. Instruments or amps, expect a high chance of returning it.

That said, good for GC for getting your money back-if anything, while there is no "blame" on your part, let this serve as a lesson. There will also be instances when USPS will "adjust" your order before it even gets to you.

I've driven hundreds of miles to see and try out equipment rather than order it throught the mail, or trust the postal services not to destroy it, but hey, that's me.

Good luck, and again, kudos to GC for getting your money back quickly.

I have been to that RI Guitar Center and this sounds about right. It just feels lazy in there.

If you are in south RI you're better off heading to some of the local shops like Wakefield Music.

Agreed. I only go in there if I absolutly HAVE to... and it's usually kicking and screaming. I feel kind of dirty after I leave.

Main Street Music is my go to shop now that Daddy's in no more. They don't have much, but what they don't have I can order. You need used at a good price? That's why we have the Talkbass Classifieds. I've always gotten fair deals off here.

Sorry to hear about the cabinet but it sounds like it turned out OK. First off-I am sure the salesperson probably described the cabinet accurately then things fell apart in shipping. That said, I gotta tell you all from personal experience: beware when buying anything unique, bulky and heavy from GC that requires shipping. I have no faith in their ability to properly pack and ship large, heavy items unless they are in original packaging/crates. I also know they do not have consistent shipping practices store to store. While the return policy is great, it sucks when you want something you've spent time looking for and it gets damaged in shipping.
