Hey, what luck, was just wondering where to ask some guitar questions. My foray into electric instruments started on bass in college, then I got into guitar when my P&W group needed one more than they needed a bassist. I've gotten back to bass with my current band, but still play my 6-string piccolo basses quite a bit.
Anyway, I'm wondering who's had experience with the Browne Protein? I've listened to a few demos of "mid-hump into blues drive" duals, and while the KOT is legend for a reason in this arena, the Protein is a serious contender, and a bit cheaper than the Duellist.
I'm also casually interested in an amp that will complement my current Fender Bassbreaker 30R. The 30R is a flexible amp, capable of spanky cleans and
all the drive. It is an EL84 amp, which gives it a British-y tone flavor somewhere in the Marshall/Orange vein, mid-focused, kinda downplays the subtle differences of pickups, and has basically none of Fender's traditional glassy cleans. It's great for what it does, but not a true do-all. So, to complement its tone and capabilities, I'm looking at a more traditionally Fender-voiced 6L6 or 6V6, and the two major models in consideration are the Hot Rod Deluxe and the Super-Sonic 22.
- HRD: On the plus side, it's the clean amp of choice, especially as a pedal platform and under a grand, and the latest V4 revision of the circuit has made the volume knob much more useful for bedroom-type playing. On the downside, the drive channel's kinda meh; you might find some use of it for country/blues, but most rockers just run a pedal into the front. To me, there's just something off about paying for a gain channel I know I'll likely never switch to.
- SS22: Seemingly the solution to the HRD's main problem; a two-channel 6V6 amp with independent EQs and a two-knob drive gain stage, giving you a classic Fender clean tone with plenty of usable drive options. Biggest downsides I've heard are QC issues, a high noise floor, the good old "all the volume you really want is somewhere between 0 and 1 on the knob" issue, and its four-figure price tag.
Was just wondering what the gallery's thoughts were on the pedal and these two amps.
