Ok, here's one I don't think has been done.
All of us here spend alot of our time making some really unique and beautiful instruments, but have any of you taken the time to construct a wooden stand for your instruments?
I just slapped together a quick multiple stand today in an effort to condense my basses into one spot in the bandroom. It's butt-ugly, but functional. And it has inspired me to build a nicer multiple guitar stand out of some decent wood, something that will look nice in the bandroom as it displays my basses and holds them safely.
Anyone? Let's see what you've made, whether just functional or ultra-fancy.

Here's my junker. Yup it is ugly, but it'll be replaced quickly with a much better one.

Thanks. After searching ALOT for a decent looking multiple stand, I figured is give this a shot.
I can't stand the PVC ones. Too cheap looking. Besides, what self-respecting woodworker would make a cheap plastic guitar stand when we have the tools at our disposal to create something as cool as our basses?

Yeah, this is strictly for display purposes in my home studio/bandroom. I've seen a few that were really nice. I'm contemplating one that'll hold at least 6 instruments (several basses plus my acoustic guitar and maybe my dulcimer), needs to fit along the wall or in a corner. Weight doesn't matter cuz it won't be traveling to gigs, this is only for at home.

Very good point; as a broke grad student I typically go the cheap route, but now that I think about it, IIRC, PVC costs just as much as wood, so if I can find someone with the right tools I'd be set.

I'm on this. Ive spent enough time looking online at stands that people have made, including a site that featured a guitar stand building contest!!
I'm going to use this thread I guess, and document my build. If anyone wants to add, please feel free. I won't speak for the rest of the LC, but I appreciate all woodworking.
Step one is the plan. Believe it or not, I haven't seen alot of variation. This page seems to be what they all look like.

Hi.

A good idea.

DIY stands/hangers usually belong into the very beginnings of our beloved hobby/profession, but like You said, no reason not to make them still.

There's quite a few factory takes on wooden stands

Also, IIRC, Taylor and Martin has wooden stands for their acoustics.

This is what I ended up doing in my shop around the walls, Stands kept taking up too much floor space.
Tools needed- hand saw, and drill. Home depot cost $19
...material list, 1- 1"x4"x10' piece of clear pine, titebond, 20 pk of #8x 2 1/4" wood screws, 1-5/8" dowell rod, and 2 ft clear hose from plumbing(3/4" id). I could have done 5 out of this list, but decided 4 packs were better for the wall spaces in my shop. Maybe this will help someone.;)

Here's one I found this morning. Pretty simple design, but this will be the basis for my stand. Unfortunately, there were no plans for this other than rough dimensions, so I'll be spending a little time drawing up plans, then I gotta hit the lumberyard.

This one was made with 2x4's and dowels. I'm gonna get a little fancier, not sure what woods, depends on what's laying around at the yard.

That's really cool, but I bet it's tough to work when your bench is above your head!!! Lol. Looks nice, and great idea, but DANG that's tall!!!

I checked out their site and theres definitely some inspiration there. Thanks, TR.

I threw this together this morning. Cost total $20 in wood and parts, and took less than an hour. I'll revisit it again sometime in order to make it nicer, but for now, my guitars are all in one place and NOT leaning against the wall. Mission accomplished.

After a few hours, I went back and added side bracing and some more padding, and used a wall hanger on the left side so I have a place to hang my dulcimer.

Now I have spots or 15 guitars, and my total cost was under $20.

I'm happy enough with this for my own purposes, but in the future will be trying again with better woods and a more aesthetically pleasing design.

I really like the looks of that one. I think it's safe to say that there is a market for this sort of thing.

As many boutique basses as there are out there, I'm really surprised we don't have more options for displaying them.

I'm on this. Plus, today's build, however ghetto for a first try, was ALOT of fun.

Hey Rip,

Was thinking about this myself just yesterday. Being a Thunderbird lover myself, I get a bit panicky sometimes because of the way it sits...some of the stand alone units are particularly nerve racking.....maybe for your next mod your could try to have a slot or two modded for the thunderbird lover. Also the top bar, for a suggestion, could you rotate the top bar so the instruments neck would be flatter so that the neck would be supported by the whole back piece and not just on a small part of neck? I'm gonna delve into this sometime soon. Spending most of my time on the 40x60 rink in my backyard right now!!
