James Hetfield has an impeccable right hand. He actually did play bass on Metallica's very first recording, but that was more for lack of a bassist.

Pete Townsend basically played the parts that a bassist would conventionally play in The Who's earlier stuff.

Adam Jones of Tool would be great at bass because he puts together chord voicings in very melodic ways while always staying in time.

Tosin Abasi frequently slaps the lowest 2 string on his 8-string, but then again I'm pretty sure he dabbles with bass a bit.

Bryan Giles and David Sullivan of Red Fang mostly play heavy rhythm parts in low tunings, and they bring a really punchy low-end. If Aaron Beam weren't the best young bassist in modern rock I'd say they were decent candidates.

Rob Flynn? Maybe?

Dickie Betts - the way he noodled around, providing counterpoint to melodies, was like a piccolo-bass to Duane's slide.

For that matter, Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes might step in to replace Otteil, with the Allman fans hardly noticing the void.
