Epi LP... with a few upgrades down the road not very different than a "real" Les Paul... (although I guess you could say the same about the others too)

By the way I play all types of rock except that emo stuff

i don't know why so many have bad feelings towards the "emo" genre. i know there are some pretty catchy riffs on guitar and bass for some bands that i know, which would probably be considered "emo".

as a musician, you are an artist. by shutting yourself out from a certain kind of music, it is like cutting off a possible creative flow.

but anyway.... i like the tele.

really, an epi is a gibby...

It's like how the Ford Taurus and Mercury Tracer are the same care, but the Mercury has more oprtions and more bling, thus the higher price tag...

For electric, I looked around a long time and nothing satisfied (Tele, Strat, PRS, Les Paul, etc.), until I found my Ibanez Prestige S1520, and it rules.

It has a very slim nick, very nice electronics, thin small body, and looks nice. Also I've not had any problems with the 5-way switch, unlike just about every other electric guitar.

If you're going to choose from just the list you drew up, I vote for the LP. If you're willing to spend a tad bit more coin, you could probably find a used Gibson "Special" model. It doesn't have any of the fancy options like the other Gibson models (carved tops, special finishes, etc.), but they're great guitars for the money, and perfect for what you want to play.

There's a guy selling a Greco LP copy in the Classifieds that you might want to check out too...Greco's LP models are so close to Gibson specs that it's hard to tell the two apart (I believe that his is one of the "lawsuit" models)

Also check out Schecter and Ibanez. If you can get your hands on an Ibanez Saber model, you'll instantly fall in love.

I own a Gibson SG, and love everything about it. I can get a killer blues tone, or insane crunchy metal. I play AC/DC and Black Sabbath style stuff on it, and hardly ever go for squeely solo stuff. Marshall amp and insane distortion. I think Les Pauls shine better for solo work because the extra body gives them more sustain.

When it comes to Mexican strats vs. Epiphone, I'd take Epiphone any day of the week. Especially their SG's, Epiphone makes some killer SG's, even if you don't spend another 200 later to put in American pickups. I always had to work really hard to get a good sound out of a stratocaster, but my SG sounded good right off the bat.

You brought up that you wanted a standard strat cause it said "Fender" on it. I actually respect Gibson MORE because they don't put their name on the outsourced stuff. They don't try to trick unsuspecting parents.

Well I just got back from guitar center and sam ash, I played a lot with the Epi SG and LP, and i'm pretty sure im taking the Fender's out of my list because I loved the SG sound, and I was a bit dissapointed with the Strat/Tele sound. Plus the looks of the Epi's are awesome

I'd get an Ibanez s-series before any of those. But of these choices, definitely the Strat.

Why do you have to get one of those? They sure can sound nice with metal, but there are betters, especially for "newer" metal.

Im no means at all an expert at guitars, but i know ESP, Schecter, amongst some other brands make great guitars for metal. But, seriously the best thing wud be to find a guitar forum and ask there, they probably know more about this, but imean, maiden i believe plays on fenders, so ofcourse it can work, but they dont use a real heavy tone like in todays metal.

I know its a bass forum but I play a little of both and just curious on this guitar dilemma

no one has asked what kind of amp you are going to use with what ever guitar you are buying. this is more important for guitar than bass. i have alot of guitars, fender, gibson, rickenbacker, heritage, ect. my favorite desert island guitar is the fender telecaster. you may or may not know this but the lead in zep's stairway to heaven was played on a tele, not a les paul as many assume. the point being a tele can do any style of music. do not be fooled by the bridge pickup in a tele. it is twangy yes, but it can darken up like a humbucker real quick. you have not lived until you play a tele through a mesa boogie dual or triple rectifier. this will rip the faces off the people near the stage. a tele will always cut through alot of distortion and saturation and chords will remain dicernable. tele's look old fashioned, but they are very deceptive guitars to the uninitiated. they will do any kind of music, but if you have poor technique, forget it. they are the most demanding electric guitar to play. you need one. peace, jeff
