Double Bass Gut-a-like strings on a 1/2 size double bass?

Eurosonic orchestra don't bow? Couldn't find a definitive discussion about those as pizz strings.

The Jargars have more fundamental and less sustain, bow well and would not be too loose on your 1/2 size. Any gut a like will be too floppy. I only know the eurosonics with the nylon wrap over a metal core and those do not bow.

Reading Gollihur's description the Jargars sound like a really good choice for me. Only having looked at the 1/2 size offerings I'd missed them. Their construction seems like no problem to wind a 3/4 set way past the silk onto the tuner. Thanks a lot for pointing me to these.

You might want to ask Gollihur about winding these past the silk. I think it might be okay but they do have some dampening material in them and I am not sure if that might get affected.

You can wind any steel core string past the silk onto the tuner.

Synthetic core strings (specially monofiber like Dominants) can break because the metal (specially steel) windings may cut into the core when bended under high tension.

Thanks for confirming my gut (no pun intended) feeling. Even a stiff metal core flat wound electric bass string can be made to wind past the silk without breaking. Gentle pre-bending and massaging it onto the post is the secret. Didn't see why metal core double bass strings should in general be much different.

Point taken about synthetic cores. Not so keen on those anyway as a magnetic pickup works well for me.
