Double Bass Gut Strings: Are They Worth It To Try? (part I)

Yea. Sounds right to me. I never found an E/A gut that did it for me under all the contexts I find myself in.

I always thought that Evah pairing would be a good one. Never did it.

Watch for the sticky humidity & wild tuning flux thing. It hit me just after I settled in and thought I'd never use any other combination in my life. It is the bastard at the door just waiting to spoil the party. I hope it doesn't visit you.

That's the surprise for me.... I'm not missing anything on either one, all the way up the neck. Sustain and clarity are all there on this bass, but with the gut sound. I didn't even raise the bridge adjusters. Really shocked me, actually. Big bass sound, clear as you like, all the way up.

I'm guessing they would match up really well with Animas, too.

One little P.S..... I just played a bit this morning, to check the tuning after playing yesterday. Spot on, perfect. I guess these babies did all their stretching on Mark's bass. :cool:

Jay-sus, they sound fat. I played facing the corner to hear it bounced back at me. Frickin' room was shaking. Me likey.

Marcus has a Medium Lyon G and Medium Lyon D. The G has a lot of miles on it. The D is broken in but I switched to a light D pretty early on. They will get tighter and more focused over the next couple of weeks particularly the D.

I'm using Garbos on my '28 for E and A (Lyon G and D) and they really rock so I'm turning into a believer with mixed sets. The full Gamut set is still on the '74. I don't have any problem with the Gamut E. In fact, I think it rocks the house when I crank it up so your E issues might be just string specific (i.e. another E might work better).

I'm finding that the tuning issues I have with the full gut set are pretty much not there with the mixed set. Sure the D and G move around a little but NOTHING like with the full set. Compared to the full set, the mixed set is like playing on Spiros.

I'm glad you're digging the strings Marcus. Another convert. We're slowly taking over the world!!!

Welcome to the club. It is so satisfying to hear that you have taken to the guts well. If I could recommend the Garbo A and E as a remedy for your problem.

I'm sure you've noticed that the gauge of the Gamuts is drastically different when compared to the Evah Pirazzis. For me that was the biggest problem when transitioning between the Helicore A and E and the Gut. My left and right hand both had to adapt to a totally different feel. On the other hand, the Garbo are a perfect match in terms of gauge. They have that growl, warmth, and clarity that you are describing that you are looking for. And the thickness is so comfortable when coming from playing a line on the D and G into the A and E.

Thanks, Kevin. I'm not really foreseeing any problem with the Evahs. The gauge difference doesn't really bother me.

I think I could probably deal with the guts on the bottom in a band... but with duos and trios, I don't think I have the testicular fortitude at the moment.

I'd think Garbos would be a good match as well. I spent a lot of time on Animas, and I might even have an old E & A to throw on for grins. But the initial feeling I'm getting with the Evahs on the bottom is positive.

You want me to send these guts back to you? Otherwise, I can pay 'em forward to someone else if they want to try them.

There are so many good alternatives these days to use for the E&A along with plain guts on the D&G, roundwound guts are not really worth the trouble, IMO. Various strings I've used in the past with plain gut and liked are Pirastro Pizzicato, Pirastro Eudoxa, Velvet Anima and Garbo (Velvets aren't so good for arco) My current favorite are Super-Sensitive Sensicores. I've been using them with Lenzner guts for around the last six weeks and I'm very happy with this set up. The Sensicores bow reasonably well. Bowing on plain gut takes skill, but I've improved some. Less pressure, more speed, and plenty of Nymans rosin. Personally, I'm just as happy with the Lenzners as with the more expensive Gamuts.
