Double Bass GUTS ARE SO MUCH FUN!!!

I currently Goetz plain gut GDA with a Spiro Weich Ext E/C; a NOS Anima E/C has come up at a reasonable (half) price. Is it worth trying? I'm a little bored/tired with the S[iro and had been thinking about going back to a Jargar Dolce or Medium E/C (the dolce was the original ext string on the set up)

Any thoughts on the Ext Anima? I never played any Velvet strings when they were around.
Thanks

the Animas were always under gut when i was in new orleans and when they were popular so I think it may be cool. i'd keep that spiro in the bag though cuz like we all remember, velvets broke if you looked at them the wrong way

The Gamut Pistoy A is a wonderful string; it feels and sounds great, and its tuning stability is much better than wrapped guts. I had a "medium" and used it for several months. I would not recommend any thinner gauge than that unless you're a rockabilly player. The low tension and thick diameter can be challenging for speedy music; there's a reason plain As and Es are rare. I think perhaps that the plain A is best suited to bowing "period" music and slapping - not to bebop or post-baroque orchestral.

One other drawback: I had to widen the tailpiece slot and drill the tuner shaft in order to install the string.

I use wrapped Gamuts on A and E. Can't help you with a Chorda comparison, though.

Andy,

Are the wrapped Gamuts for your A and E flatwound on gut? Like a Eudoxa string? I’m thinking about guts for this old Kay I’m restoring and was wondering about the E and A strings. I’ve never really liked the roundwound wrap of the old La Bella gut strings and such; and I don’t like the floppiness of a plain gut E and A string.

No. All wrapped guts by Gamut have polished round wire. At one time I would have agreed with you (and I've tried Oliv and Eudoxa), but the roundwound wrap doesn't bother my fingers at all, and it's definitely better IMO than flatwound with the bow.

Anybody tried the plain Gamut Pistoy A? Thoughts? And what gauge should I go with, I have a medium G with a light+ D. Also has anybody used the wrapped Gamut E, and could compare to the Chorda CH E? I’d love to try what the plain A would be like, and now Gamut has a -20% offer..

Moro! I had the plain light A with different D`s and G`s, and ended up with Pistoy light+ D and med+ G. That`s the gauge people recommended here for best pizz sustain. It cost me a liver to get it to Finland, 280 euros total if I recall. It`s easily the best plain A out there, but my bass has a severe wolf on the A string and I think that is the reason why all plain A`s have a bit dead pizz tone on it. Eero Tikkanen bought my Pistoys and is using them on his bass with Evah E now. I`d think that you could contact Eero to try it out if you`re around Helsinki area?

I have a gamut silver A on loan from a friend and a thing I think a lot of us dont realize is the gauge of the wrap wire is incredibly small. I have the A next to a spiro and I dont notice the winding at all. Sounds great, bows incredibly well, starts instantly. I'm really digging the feel and sound of it.

I wonder if Dan L would ever do a silver wrapped D and G? A whole set of these would be absolutely killer

Raw gut hold there pitch pretty well.

Genssler's Rainworm E/A are the first synthetic string that matches raw gut 99% as well as wrapped gut strings. They are very similar to the old Velvet Garbos but they bow as well as wrapped gut. Hopefully they last... I never thought I would use anything other than the Gamut E/A but I think I am sold on them.

hm, this sounds new - what are these? i only found Sonoros or tempera or something, but rainworm sounds like a medical problem :)

i’m really digging the Aquila Red Springs synthetics but they aren’t bowable…. would love to find bowable synthetic gut set!

Rain worm is one of Genssler’s string sets. There is a Sonores pdf or word doc that explains all of the string sets. Email them for it.

Overwound gut have held up pretty well here in the middle of Kansas, too, with all the weather variation we get. I haven't had issues with tuning stability except for when we get a crazy enough humidity swing that any strings would be having trouble because of the way the bass itself is reacting to everything.
