This is a great education, and the lesson is that great bass playing may be right in front of you and your blinders keep you from hearing it. By 1987, I had tuned out Madonna. I remember like “Like a Prayer,” but I never really listened to it. I had no idea there was a cool octave pedal bass part driving the song. I just assumed it was keyboard bass. Guy Pratt is a truly great player who comes off as a totally “aw shucks” kind of guy. He’s got to know he’s great, but he radiates no negative ego vibes at all.
Check out his book, “my bass and other animals.” I bought it on audible a few years ago and it was a hilarious companion to a long drive to and from a gig. He is really funny in addition to being a great player.

That book is great. I need to read it again.
Guy was a member on here and would chime in occasionally. Toy Matinee is one of my all-time favorite albums, and Guy's playing on it is fantastic. If you've never heard it, do yourself a favor.
Guy's sound with the octave pedal is great... mixes well with his style of playing.
And yeah, his book was a fun read. It's still on my shelf... I need to give it another spin sometime.
