Hey guys, I'm going to look at a super haggard early-90s svt810 this weekend, it has had the bottom replaced due to water damage, and a small hole in a bottom speaker. The seller says it still sounds great, my question is whether these cabs go funky over time, or if they still sound good after the years? Does the wood or anything ever soften up? What should I check for? You can't be too picky around here, ampegs don't come up for sale in the great plains area very often, this is Behringer country.

The cabs don't go funky over time unless improperly stored or taken care of. The OSB ones ('96-'06) will tear right apart with the right amount of water damage.
Check for blown speakers while you're at it. Stick a 1/4" jack in it and touch the + to the tip and - to the sleeve. Make sure all the speakers jump outwards the same amount. The set with a hole might be the exception because the hole could let air vent as the cones move.
Just like with relationships, it's a bad idea to let desperation get the better of you just 'cause you've got options. If you've got any doubts about it's structural integrity or repairs, pass on it.
Edit: Forgot to mention that I've owned an original '72 SVT 810 and a '98 OSB 810e and never had a problem with either as far as construction goes. I got the '98 for cheap ($75) and it needed speakers but I knew that going into it.
