My wife insists on carving traditional jack-o-lanterns so your certainly not alone on that.I guess I'm super-sensitive to most of them. Even anything as much as a frown on an otherwise traditional style one already looks sinister. (Triangle eyes turned upside down to look like a frown)
I think the trend probably started in the early 90's. That's when I started seeing artists doing more elaborate and creative ones, and then I guess people started taking off from there.
I just prefer old-fashioned things. It seemed to work fine for decades, I don't know.
