Hammon Dark Star

Well it's a single coil so it sounds different than a standard pbass pickup. It's does have some Pbassness due to it's location on the bass itself but it's more responsive to plucking hand dynamics. It's really hard for me to describe the tone but it is a great pickup. Mine does sound killer on old ZZ Top tunes.....Oh if you pick up Wilco's new live disc Kicking Televsion John Stirrat used his DS Lakland BG for most of it.

Nice basses!

My new MIJ P-bass just arrived yesterday and looks the same as your black one except it's all natural and has an ash body...

Listening to Wilco right now and would decribe the sound as being very warm, fat, round and deep...

Wouldn't decribe as being very percusive though but he might have the tone all the way down....

Which album? It is my recolection that John Stirrat only got his darkstarred Glaub in the last year or so.

I just got my first Wilco album ("Being There") this weekend after hearing some of thier new stuff online. Holy crap! I can't believe this awesome band has been in my backyard for all this time. I see more Wilco albums in my future....

As for the pickups, I have played a darkstarred Lakland Hollowbody and Decade. The pickups are very versatile and change dramatically based on the type of instrument, their placement, and your personal playing position and technique.

A Darkstar bridge soloed can be quite precussive, while a darkstar in the mid or neck position with the tone rolled off, can be super deep thick and fat.They are a bit p-esqe', but the only way I could describe them was big and expansive, in size, sound, frequency range, and output.

I have one coming in soon which will be going into a Dirnt Pbass I bought fairly cheap off of ebay. Should be a cool little project, but it may go up for sale soon after that do to very expensive GAS. I will report back on how it works after all is said and done.

Yep, and my guitarist started building at his shop 2 years ago and actually did most of the build. Doug shaped the body ( with a little help from myself :cool: ) and cut the neck. 1 piece alder body, spalted maple top, Brazilian RW board,clay dots, J neck ( 7.25" radius 1.5" at the nut/tele headstock, bone nut, DS's,stacked pots ( 500K all around), Hipshot string thru bridge,Hipshot "Glaub" tuners/d-tuner,2-tone burst, weighs in at 9.1 lbs.

Well, the live albums Zoomboy said John Stirrat played the Darkstar Glaub on: Kicking Television I and II...

The bass sound on these albums is very big and deep....

Not exactly the sound I'm looking for but it works well for this type of music.

I would like to hear more examples of the Darkstar on recorded music.

My dark star P has a very 'P bass' vibe to it. What I notice is

1. extended range and clarity. It's lacking the big mid range bump of the P so over all, it sounds more even.

2. The output level is absurd. Prior to the dark star I had no idea what color the clip like on my Gk was... it is yellow...

3. Due to the output the pickup responds well to picking dynamics. It is hands down the most sensitive pickup I've ever experiences in terms of attack and postition. Palm muting with a stiff jazz guitar pick sounds like carpet bombing ...

4. Adjustable pole pieces mean that you can get a very even string to string balance no matter what.

5. It is not a P Bass anymore... When I want a P Bass I use my Aero equipped Rumblefish PJ and roll off the J. They are similar but the has an undeniable thump of it's own and sometimes - that's the sound. Sometimes the DS just brings the party... IMO - both belong in my stable.

To the best of my knowledge John Stirrat received his DS Glaub after they recorded A Ghost is Born. I read a quote somewhere that most of Kicking Television was done with the Glaub.

Man, that's even nicer now that I've heard the specs. I should contact DR; I used to live near the shop in SF and had work done on basses before; always well done. A Darkstar bass is in my future...awaiting the Darkstar 5 pickups!

arent darkstars supposed to be the same as original Hagstrom pickups? I am curious becasue My Ovation Magnum has this totally sick neck pickup. It is twice teh size of a regular humbucker, but its actually 4 individually wound single coils. None of the regular pickups out there come close. Anybody with experience with the Magnum and the Darkstar know if they are similar?

As in sound or size?
Here are some pickup cavity dimensions:

Dark Stars are uni-coil as opposed to quadra-coil. ;)
The sound is full range, high output without a midrange hump. (flat)
If you want more or less midrange I suggest you dial it in with your amp...or hand position.
