Fleetwood Mac's anchorman for 50 years onward, is 76 today.

One of my personal faces on the Mt. Rushmore of bass players, he's always been right where he needed to be, doin' a job. And when the work was done, fades quietly out of the light without a lot of fanfare or to-do about him. Just tips the cap to the crowd, a short bow, and steps back. Bass player. Has often remarked that if it weren't for Mick and the rock & roll stuff, he'd just be a boring old guy reading books and watching soccer matches. Gotta' love that kind of detachment. A few years ago while on tour, news came he had to immediately go into cancer treatment. Everybody thought the band was done. He stomped cancer, picked up his bass and went around the world again.

If you haven't before, give him a listen. There's genius in his lines. But he won't tell you that.

Rock on, Johnny Mac. Many Happy Returns.
