Other than that, I’ve been currently playing with palm muting to “simulate” upright lines, especially from 50’s material. Trying to get the “slap” (more of a pluck on EBG) effect in there at tempo, while maintaining consistent muting is pretty challenging.

I always thought it was Pei Mei's "5 Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique"!

Technical chops are challenging, but if you can't make what you play pleasing or entertaining for people who aren't bass nerds, you're not there yet.

Oh and for me, bowing on double bass.
Being an entertainer, vs just a player.
Playing a third of what I want to play, because it's the morally right thing to do to the drummer.

Personally, inserting fills into bassline during another instrument's solo that don't call attention away from the soloist.
Training your ear to where your fingers "know where to go" - you can play without thinking.
Any technique that you don't personally enjoy listening to.
I don't like slap except in specific bands like the Brothers Johnson, so I've never had even the slightest interest in learning it. I've never written a bass part for a song and thought that what it needs is slap. The truly tiny amount of effort I've put into learning it was quarter-hearted at best. That to me is a hard technique to learn.

The “practicing regularly” technique…
I officially suck at slap bass. I've tried numerous times and just can't get it down. Maybe I was not put on this Earth to be Bootsie Collins.Honestly, what's the most difficult thing to master on the bass?

Perfectly articulated “problem” I share. Probably not even a problem, more of just a fact.
One thing that’s always sat in the back of my mind through my journey is: if I play a ripping or perceivably ripping slap part, these people (audience, band mates) will think I’m really good, I better learn how to do it.
But then I never did, which shows you how much I actually care about what they think, other than my technique in service to the song. Which I still don’t care what they think - I’m the expert in my service to the song
I don’t go to a hand surgeon when I need surgery who is wishy washy about which tendon to cut. I go to someone with command.
Singing while playing without limits.
