Harmonizers

I'm just getting going with singing (lead) while playing bass and have been wondering about using a harmonizer. I've heard that it won't work with the bass so I was thinking about running it with either the guitar or keyboard instead.

Any thoughts or tips concerning these units for bass player/singers? Any particular units that are good and easy to work with, or any in particular to stay away from?

The harmonizer on the VB99 works very well on bass.

You can do 6 parts harmony , and create scales of your choice.

For vox , Eventide is a reference.

I LOVE my TC Helicon Voicelive 2. I split the signal from the rhythm guitar players rig. Great effects and harmonies.

Our singer has a Digitech Vocalist live, the smaller one, and runs it from one of the guitarists. Works wonderfully. She's the only female in the band and so it's nice to be able to fill out the sound with female tones amongst our manly backing vocals. (I do occasionally sing falsetto too, but sometimes the harmoniser is just easier).

However, the key to making it work well and convincingly is not to over use it. The minute it becomes obvious, is the minute you shouldn't use it.

Are there any good value vocalizers out there.. have thought of picking one up to dork around with..

I know this may be far fetched.. any computer based real time VST type things that work for live performance.. wondering if Ableton has something useful.

I have a tc helicon harmony g, and have been using it to good effect. I work with a few bands, so rather than try to split someone's guitar signal I have set the presets for common keys. I have two colors of highlighted lines where the harmony "works" (these are hired-gun gigs, so I'm using cheat sheets.

It has worked well- subtlety is key. When my bandmates comment that they notice it, I back it down a bit. I'm after texture/fullness, not another equally prominent voice.

Having the g is nice for when I do solo guitar stuff. It's affordable and stomps all over the Digitech version. It also makes for a nice sound, even without harmony - my nd767a gets along with it very well.

With how you guys use this.. wouldn't a good old fashion rackmount analog delay add the "richness and fullness" you're trying to achieve.

Does anyone know if the T C Helicon Harmony G will work with a bass guitar?

We have a Harmony G (Fantastic!)- but I have never used it with bass - we feed it from one of the guitar players. My guess is NO, since it is looking for the chord structure - i.e. it sings minor when it hears a minor chord.

However, it does have a mode where it can work with lead and finger-picking, so there must be a way. I don't think it tracks the bass, though.

For what specific sound are you looking for with a harmoniser?
I have a Boss GT-10B with 2 harmonizers in it, and even though it does work, i am not all that impressed with it's results on the bass. I am happy with using a Roland GR-20 bass/guitar synth, and feeding the GR output back into the GT-10B external loop Return, and applying the GT-10B harmonizer to that signal only.
