Has anyone come up with a "Smart" Drum Machine?

I was watching a video:
YouTube - ‪The Lemon Song (Bass guitar and drums) Cover‬‏

And I noticed how the drums would change to his playing. I know that's it's most likely a drum line for the actual song, but I was thinking...

What if there was a drum machine that would listen to what you were playing, and adjust to your tempo, etc.; and if you were to play a lot faster, the drums would change to the tempo that you were playing in right on the spot...

Lots of MIDI stuff can get tempo references from external sources. Once that "reference" has been determined, it must be constant.

One possibility, steady quarter notes on the bass drum, etc.

I'm sure the concept can be improved as artificial intelegence becomes more affordable.

well, there's this:

it's free software (at the moment). you have to run it with Ableton. it keeps time with human players - is designed to run along with a real drummer so maybe not good for your purposes?

(it's designed and programmed by a good friend of mine, i helped him beta test it on drums - it's good! PM me if you want more info...)
