i typically only use five channels for drums, but eight are 'reserved' --- sometimes one or two of the empty channels come in handy for an extra announcement mic, or a guest appearance/musician. etc.

Well, the "Hi-Z" input is good even for a passive bass. Everything should work just fine.

I've tried running 1/4" direct the mixer for the past two rehearsals. The tone was very usable, except I was getting weird electronic noise on my channel (low-level hissing, popping, whining, squealing). After swapping out cables to determine that was not the problem, I discovered that the input has a bit of noise when the Digitech is engaged.

I've sent my mixer in for service once already to have the channel 2 input replaced, and now channel 16 is acting up. Channel 1 is ok except for when Digitech is engaged. At some point, I'll need to send it in for service, but in the meantime the amp sim is unusable.

Sorry to hear about your issues, I have not personally experienced any problems whatsoever. The noise you experienced with the modeling? I may have overlooked it as the hiss from the mixed ancient tube amps may have masked it a bit. I gated those mics and adjusted EQ to eliminate, by that time though, I had employed the Torpedo pre.
And currently use the direct out of my Mesa WD800.

Yes, the noise is definitely from the modeling. It goes away when I turn off the modeling.

That is unfortunate.
Did you try channel 2, as it also has the modeling, and try toggling the HiZ setting on and off..

Addendum, check your input gain, that may introduce noise if set too high.
Perhaps you would have better results simply using the EQ, just a thought.
