Double Bass Hat peg dissintegration on the job

I like seeing an old bass with hat pegs where they're all mismatched... I enjoy turning things, and for me, one of the most difficult tasks is making two (or four or five) items that are exactly alike, especially when placed so close together! Even worse is trying to match not just a new turning to an old one, but then trying to get the finish to look close.

Have you tried using a (large) stationary magnifying glass between you and your work when turning small projects like hatpegs? If you have trouble matching the finish, just refinish the remaining the hatpegs with the same paint or stain you used on the new one(s).

10-4 did all of mine last fall...got to orient the grain the way i wanted it..the nail biter is when you're finishing up next to the spindle so as not to leave too much to clean up in the center of the knob..cost about $.06 a piece and broke the fun barrier.
