Have you ever played a song for a girl/guy?

I'm planning on playing Darkness by sweet trip for this girl online and want to record it and upload it on youtube. You know? getting that you know what? Joking aside, have any of you guys/gals ever played a song for someone you like? If so, any advice for a 26 year old trying to pickup a girl? Assuming you guys are a lot older than me; you must have more wisdom in this kind of situation.

Here's the song

In all seriousness, know what’s going to appeal to her, not what you think is going to appeal to her. No second chance to make a first impression, and all that. There is one thing that is worse than her hating your selection...her complete indifference to it. Nothing like ripping your heart out and serving it back to you on a platter.

That song is...heavily produced pop, with lots of synth, etc. You'll do far better picking up an acoustic and singing something to her live than you will doing a month of recording, mixing, etc.

Listen to Paul McCartney singing "Michelle" - that's the vibe you want.
Yep. Unless that’s her favorite song, I’d find something else. Nothing in that says “I like you”.

I'm trying to imagine people I've known but not been interested in a relationship with, and thinking, how would I feel if they did that?

If they, say, shared a mixtape with me: eh, fine, personally I think I could say "thanks", not engage much more than that, and get on with my life.

If they recorded their performance of a song just for me? That starts to feel uncomfortable.

And from the other side: I'd feel like a jerk to weird someone out in that way.

If you don't know if they're actually interested, I'd say it's past time to actually ask. (And be prepared to accept whatever answer or non-answer you get.)

Yes, many times. The only one that didn’t swoon I married.

Once upon a time, when I was young and dumb, I had a friend with a recording studio in his home. Had the bright idea to record a song for this girl who I knew liked me. I played guitar and sang, and my buddy played bass and drums. It came out awesome. We were proud of that recording. Girl never talked to me again after that. The end.

Not for a girl I liked, exactly. I was sharing a house with a buddy and his girlfriend.. and their two cats.. and their baby..

Well, I was in my room writing a song about the situation there. The door was cracked and in walked his girlfriend wanting to know what I was playing. I explained it was a song about her, him, the baby and the cats. She asked to hear it and after listening said she liked it a lot and would like to hear more of my songs as I wrote them.

They all broke up and went their ways.. me too.. and that's The End of that.

This. I've done it dozens of times (I play 6 string too), and I'm not much older than you, but only to girls I'd already won over. I also made tons of mix CDs, because.

However! Just do it, don't worry too much. Treat it like it's easy and normal and something you could do in your sleep. Be cool, but not distant (says the anti social hermit).

As someone who was a young girl long ago, I never liked it much when guys made me guess about their thoughts or feelings. If a guy played a song for me, I would wonder if it had some sort of meaning, or maybe he just thought I would like the song. It never made me feel closer to him, just made me wonder if he liked me but didn't want to tell me that. And that was a thought that made me uncomfortable.

So my advice is this. If you like this girl, just tell her.

Huh, first of all brave of you to ask.

Second, No I have never done it.

Third, LBS gave you an answer that's worth your attention.

Fourth. General rule around courtship (I promise I'm not quite as old as that makes me sound): "Impressing" someone into being interested in you is generally a bad strategy. Girl either digs you or she doesn't, do anything that is out of character to you to "impress" them is at best a short term fix that will be figured out quickly, at worst deception (of the self as well as the young lady)

Better idea, talk to her. Tell her about why you love music and play when she asks, and ask her about what she's into.

Yep and with this ditty...it's a real panty-dropper...

"Get up out of that bed and wash your face and hands
Get on in that kitchen, make some noise with them pots and pans
A-get to cookin' my breakfast 'cause you know I'm a working man
You ain't been wearin' no bra, you just lettin' 'em boogie joogie bow
You keep on wearin' short dresses with the hem halfway your thigh
And I could see your little bikini bathing suit when the wind is high..."

Actually, it was "Surrey with the Fringe on Top" from "Oklahoma". Impressed the hell out of Susan 30 years ago.

Not me, but I think I helped a guy. This guitar carrying person and a friend came into Music Store I worked at. It was a Valentine's Day and the non-player bought sheet music to the song "More than Words" by Extreme. I found out he was to sing it to his kinda, hopeful, girlfriend while friend strummed that evening. ( Ahhh Amore' ) He handed the sheet to his friend and they went to the Guitar Corner, put on a stand, and started to play. The whole store stopped, as the chords were correct, but the voice was not . The poor guy could hardly sing as well as how high the key was. I walked over with a capo and tried to let guitarist use it. He tried . He said he just couldn't do it , because its throws him so. They went back to trying and were making a few customers wince. Not wanting to be defeated , I brought a tuner over an asked the guy to just sing the words in his "own voice". I then majorly de-tuned the guitar to match. I told guitar player as I handed it back, "Now play the sheet as written and you ( singer) start." As soon as they did , they both yelled "HEY" . They left high-giving. I truly hoped I saved a romance , because the other way would of ended with a guitar "Ka-Bong" on his head like a cartoon.

Considering the lyrics of that song are sometimes misunderstood as a request for sex I think the risk it didn't go well is quite high....
