Uhmmm.... well... reknowned doctors (and my own neglectable experience, fwiw!) say that it is just like the fire under the ashes: never really tamed and unpredictable; later in life, when you will be established with work and solve all those small issues of every man (wife, kids, house, bills etc.) you will get GAS back in the blood decuplicated... big time... trust me... you'll see...

When my GAS gets out of control I make an Excel spreadsheet listing how much each thing I need to buy will cost (min/max), and listing each thing I want to buy as well.
That kind of helps me put in perspective things like;
"if I buy that Fender Japan 66RI Jazz Bass I can't afford that tune up or the new car stereo."
:hmm:
That about the time that I start brown bagging it for lunch and I quit picking up breakfast at Peets.

This is exactly what I do, for example I passed on a Squier Jag HB so I can go see Radiohead in October

That's not really, really the point is it?? :D

A few days ago I played an ibanez BTB1206 Prestige. The setup is awesome, the sound rich, it plays effortlessly, and of course the instrument is visually beautiful. I can talk the seller down.

I'm not playing bass in any band now, or in the immediate future.

But acquiring the Ocean fretless has restimulated my love of bass. So while I might not buy that BTB1206, it does not stop me from trying to find some way, ANY way, to justify it. :help:

Dude, insert ANYTHING into "have spent X on Y" and your argument can be repeated ad nauseum. I don't know why some people here spend that amount of money on basses but then I look at myself and I see I have probably made some questionable choices in multiple areas too.

But as for pets, for me, living beings capable of feeling are way more important than pieces of wood with metal bolted onto it. You don't invest time and love in a pet if you're going to give it up or put it down the first time it gets sick... you might even think that going on but if you spend time with the pet and it becomes your honest-to-god friend, you won't hesitate to save it if you can.

Getting back to the OP... interestingly, after lots of "gear questing" over the last five years, I actually do see the GAS subsiding pretty substantially. Part of it is just realizing more and more that the gear only does so much and the rest of it is me.

checked craigslist at the last minute right before i was going to buy a vintage L2000 for some reason, i'm not really in need of a fourth bass right now, anyway low and behold there was the matching cab i've been looking for the last 16 months used at a pretty good price, it was good to be purchasing something necessary for a change
