having a little self control

after a 3000 dollar holiday vet bill for spleen and liver tumor removal i will not be buying a les paul money bass this holiday, however i am so happy that my dog is still alive i may even sell my almost finished jazz project that i have been working on for the last year, it's amazing how unimportant my gear became in an instant

Self control? What's that? In the last five months, I've purchased three Jazz basses, 5 P Basses, three Fender Rumbles (15, 30, 350), an Ampeg PF500, an Ampeg SVT-3 Pro, an Ampeg SVT-III Pro, a SWR Goliath 410, and a Genz Benz Streamliner 900. That's just for bass. I bought her a Vox amp, two Stratocasters, a Telecaster, and a piano. This music stuff is expensive.

Jesus man. Some of you guys must make bank. I bought a cheap guitar as a Xmas present to myself. Now it's back to whittling away at the 38000 of student loans.

On the bright side I should have a new professional certification in 6 months that will get me a pay bump.

I look back at that, and it sounds worse than it was. I upgraded every time, pretty much in order. Didn't keep the older stuff, just kept moving up. Oh, yeah, I've gone through 7 sets of pickups, too.

Actually, it isn't G.A.S. for me, I'm just searching for my tone, and haven't found the combination that will give it to me. I'm getting close, though.

Not a threadjack, not being a smartass or anything, but why do people spend so much money on medical bills for pets, usually dogs?

I truly don't understand it. Some friends have spent about $5,000 on their dog. I'm at a loss as far as this goes. It just boggles the mind. I'm not a pet person, don't have any, never will have any in the future.

It's their money. What do you care? I spent $900 on my dog when he got hit by a car a few years ago. Why? Because he's a good boy. I like him better than some people.

i spent 3 grand on my dog, because she lived with me when i made the transition from hot artist to starving artist to full time professor, we have been through a lot together and she is my first pet, i had bad allergies as a child and i didn't get a dog until i was over 30

we have lived in skid row, the warehouse district, the artist district, highland park, silver lake, mount washington, and hillside village

If you have other priorities ok; but if you do have the necessary amount of money... well: every time (I mean "every"!) I resisted to a GAS attack, with thoughts like

> no, I don't really need it now

> can't spend so much money just for this impulse

> let me be a grown up, reasonable man

> I do have a family, so better don't spend for a new bass even if I actually could etc...

well before or after, later on I damn regretted it!

Still have all those sweet "once in a lifetime" occasions all stamped in the back of my mind...

Thanks for not putting me in a pillory for this.
I do realize everyone has the right to spend their own money on what they deem important to them, whether it be to have pets, kids, houses, etal.
But I really don't understand spending lots of money on the upkeep of animals.

I demand 6+ strings, so fewer things pique my interest these days. I also got rid of a credit card when I started going back to school full time so that I couldn't act on temptation. Finally, I promised myself that I couldn't buy a new bass until I finished up all of the bass, amp, and pedal projects that have been accumulating in piles. I haven't purchased a bass in well over a year now.

I have to have self control and constantly remind myself how content I really am with my current rig and setup, however the thought of a new bass or piece of gear always lingers. I ask myself do I really need it? And also where could that money go more wisely right now? A lot of times I get through it, but one of these days I will jump the gun and hopefully not regret or pay for it later.
