Headless fanned fret five - the build that shouldn't be

I got the wiring done that I can do outside the cavity. I also got the battery box installed, which was surprisingly more complex than it should have been considering it's just putting a square plastic box inside a square hole. I was test fitting it yesterday and it "clicked" in, in the process of pulling it back out I jammed the plastic under my fingernails, like some kind of medieval torture device. I got it out but I can't play for a little while until my fingernail bed heals. ugh.

Anyway, progress is being made (yet another negative "review" of the DS tone capsule coming without mixing or volume pots). View attachment 4180678
I just put a DG tone capsule in a bass, if it makes you feel any better it sounds good :D

I was OK with it not coming with blend and volume cause it let me use a stacked blend/vol pot with push pull active/passive and use the existing 4 holes.

I suspect this is why they don't include them, as their main line of business is probably retrofits, not new builds. Still I can complain, can't I? :-)

I got the first string on, height looks good, I need to get all five on to do the nut string slots done. The wiring is about 90% done - all I have left is to connect all the grounds and wire in the pickups. The covers needed a little touch up on the sides, so I'm waiting on them to dry. I have to do a test fit, I might have a problem with the length of the B string - that's a 36" scale.

I spent this week doing all the little stuff I usually do after I get the bass strung up. I ordered 2 sets of Super Long sets of strings, but somehow I got 2 sets of long strings. I swear I ordered Super Long. I called MF and they shipped out a set of Super Long strings for free, so that's cool. It very well could have been my issue. Anyway, should have the strings today and making noise sometime tomorrow.

I tried to take some shots, I need to do better, but it's hard to capture this thing, apparently, it looks so much better than these pics. I'll try to take some better ones - maybe outside. I can see it's still got a few shop smudges on it too.

I haven't had much time with it, I got it set up this morning, sounds so good. That 36" B string is so great I have a lot of fivers and none of them sound as tight and focused as this one does. I think I'll be replicating this one for my next personal build.

In the "I didn't plan that, but it looks cool" file - the maple edges of the pickup covers do a nice job of tying in with the maple on the edge of the body. This was my first experience with a zero fret, I just installed the fret after leveling and it worked out perfectly. This might be the first time I've made only one nut (mainly because the depth didn't matter).

The thrust bearings on the Nova bridge make tuning super smooth. I wouldn't have complained about that on my other Nova equipped basses, but this one feels really nice, it's a good upgrade to that bridge.

7.13lbs, if that matters.

I've never played a dingwall, the only fanned fret instrument I've ever played is my BassVI. If you asked me I'd say 2" is too much of a difference in scale lengths for a multi-scale. Especially between the 1st, 2nd and 3rd frets it starts to look kind of crazy, but it really is hardly noticeable in the few minutes I played it.

I'll get a sound clip up. I always feel weird playing a commissioned instrument, like I'm playing someone else's brand new bass.

How does that work between the nut and first fret? Sorry if that is a stupid question. Or is the nut the first fret? Maybe the picture gives an illusion of something weird going on there. Once again, excellent craftsmanship and beautiful bass.
