Headphone Amps!

Wife suggested i should pick up one of these (as I'm prone to playing in the wee hours of the morning....)

so anybody use one?

Looking at:

Rockman Bass Ace
Dean Bass in a Box
Vox am Plug
Korg Tone Works
Waves GTR Modeling Headphone Amp

anybody have experience with any of these things?

Yeah - I've been using a Korg PX4B and a set of Grado S60 headphones for learning and practicing covers as a working musician for the last 8-9 months, and can't speak highly enough about this setup... I would highly recommend both - I like to play late at night, too - this way, the GF can sleep in the next room, without being disturbed... I've used the Korg to slow down passages, but stay in the same key - and run them through a loop 'til I nailed them... I've also used the pitch shifter to learn a song in a different key, used the programable drum beats - it's a very useful tool... Combined with an MP3 player or portable CD player, they really work well - excellent effects and modeling, too...

I cannot recommend the Cafe Walter HA-1 highly enough. The sound quality is far superior to most other headphone amps on the market. It doesn't have a lot of "features" per say, but that is part of the reason why the sound is so accurate.

my solution to the same dilemma is the Rolls PM 351.

Laptop into stereo line in, click station into mic input, bass into instrument. Headphones into front.... everything else is optional.


My signal chain is a bit more elaborate...
bass -> bodxt -> rolls pm 351 -> HD555 cans

Basically the same you would get with the Korg Pandora, just better

Another vote for the Korg, great headphone amp, great front end for recording, very convienient to use.

Another vote for the Cafe Walter headphone amp.

Accurate and even frequencies across, more importantly, reproduces the B string superbly.

I wish I could actually use this as a pre-amp!

I've been tempted to get the VOX Plug Amps for mobility.

Can the VOX amPlug even be used with a bass? I can't tell from the website or anything else, but it seems to be made for guitars. I am just wondering because I would love to get one, but don't know if it will even work.

Thanks guys for the suggestions.... i'm headed into the music store on monday hopefully they will actually let me try a few without too much of a hassle

apparently the Korg PX4B bas been discontinued and has been replaced with the PX4D which is for bass and guitar

One more vote for the Walter. It ain't cheap, but man, it's great for practicing. And for hearing every little thing that's wrong with your playing.

great box. i love my cafe walter.

i would also recommend the Pocket POD. great little box, that has a good sound, is really small, and is pretty affordable.

I played my bass through my VOX combo amp numerous times. The VOX amp circuit works fine for bass. I see no reason for the amPlug not to work.
