Another vote for zoom B1. Can use the effect modeler to try different sound combinations before buying Expensive equipment. But I just use what I think is is called the Marcus Miller setting, plug in my iPhone, and get to shedding.

Headphone-only practice amp

I plug into my old M-Audio Fast Track into my Mac laptop. It has a 1/4" input and a headphone out. Just have to remember to kill the speakers. Half the time, I don't even bother with Garageband, and just go with the DI sound. Though, Garageband has a ton of amp models and effects if that's your thing.
You could try an Ampeg SCR/DI. There's some used ones on the classifieds here for very good prices. Why settle on just a stripped-down sounding headphone amp when you could get good sounding headphone amp plus a whole lot more for not much additional cash and have something you could really use.
It works OK.
It must also be run thru an open app.
The free Amplitude app is OK but very basic. It does not include a free bass amp, just guitar. But I do get sound thru it and can play I tunes thru it concurrently.
It can also be run thru free Garage Band apps, but these are a little complex for what I do.
I use this when not using my Zoom B1XOn.

The only thing I don't like is my jack is on the bottom and not the front. I had good volume and OK bass tone.

If you already have an Apple I-Product, I second the iRig. Invaluable tool. If not, find a Tascam Bass Trainer used for about $100 USD.
I ended up getting the Ampeg mini amp and the Zoom. Thanks everyone for all the recommendations.
I too was looking for a portable, pocket headphone amp with aux input. I tried an iRig, but that was not good with android phones and most of the amp sims required additional purchase. Then i tried a Vox Amplug, which is convenient but sounds dull. I managed to find a Korg Pandora Px4d second hand and it ticks nearly all the boxes: beats; pitch adjustment; tuner; good sounding aux input; great range of fun effects and simulations, including loads of them designed for bass; it clips onto my belt or strap, so i can walk around the house with it. If the user interface was simpler, it would be the perfect tool for me, but i am super happy with it despite its fiddly complexity.
