The Cafe Waler HA-1 is an entirely different animal. It really does sound exactly like what's coming out of your bass; finger noise, strings hitting frets & pickups, etc... It is an excellent tool for working on your technique.

I have a Two Notes, Le Bass on my pedal board, I run that into a cheep small mixing desk and to headphones when I practice, unfortunatly while it has a headphone jack it has no Aux in (The Aux In would go through the cab sim which wouldn't sound great). This is by no means the cheapest solution but its one of the reasons I went for this pedal
I had a Korg Pandora many moons ago for guitar. I think there was a bass version. In a different league than the Amplug, but also was around $300 new compared to $30.
The Amplug is completely usable.
Another option is something like the Hotone bass amp. It is a 5 watt amp head but is tiny and can be used with only headphones, and has an input for ipod. The benefit there is that you can always hook it up to a cabinet if you ever wanted - but it lacks all the special effects and drum tracks that a headphone-practice device would have.

Btw - I did a short review on the Vox amPlug on my channel. I have the guitar version, and for the purpose of the video, I hooked it up to my stereo system. I haven't tried the bass version yet.
No Contest. PJ Bighead. I use mine almost every day. It also has an aux in for your laptop. I use Song Surgeon with the Bighead to learn tunes.

There are some other threads on this you might want to explore. I like the Phil Jones and have used the USB interface for recording. Nice extra.
The Vox amplug and the EHX are ok for what they are.
The PreSonus is (I think) relatively new. Looks like a decent mid level option - more than the Vox/EHX but less than the Phil Jones.

I just recently did a bit of recording with mine (into Audacity freeware). Nice clean sound. It's good enough for me until I want/need something like an Apollo for recording.
Just an oddball suggestion. Not cheap, but quite nice, is a 3Leaf Enabler. Gotta find em used. I believe one is in the classifieds. Buy headphone amp, get awesome DI with EQ for free 
Zoom B3. I'd call this thing perfect if it had a aux in for a simple mini stereo plug. Alas, they use USB for input from your computer.
Other than that bit of bad news, here's the goods: I call it the bass Swiss Army knife. When you do hook it up via USB, that powers the unit. Or double A batteries. Or a wall wart (included). Free software editor program for onscreen controls.
Great headphone sound. Tuner, metronomes, beats, looper, di out, serves as an interface via USB, fx out the wazzoo, artist preset patches that are pretty cool starting points for anything you could want, and amp and cab modeling.
Simple enough you don't have to read the manual.
About $150.
The B3 replaced my whole mixer and peripheral input gear practice set up.
I wonder if there's a way to hook it up to my iPad. That would be killer.

I have both the Bass version and the Twin. Actually prefer the sound of the Twin for my bass, seems to have better tone and also the FX(chorus).
