Headphone out to full blown Line Out mod...

Has anyone done it? Modded the headphone out to a lineout? I'm pretty sure it would just be a resistor mod but just need a second opinion.

So what are the odds of running the headphone out as a line out? What's the trade offs?

well a headphone out is a non balanced signal that is routed through a headphone amp (since headphones usually cannot supply their own power they need to be driven) in effect it will work, but it will run a very hot signal.

I haven't modded a headphone jack, but I have run them as line outs into a mixer. What are you hoping to do in this case?

A transformer can be used to balance an unbalanced signal. Check out Invalid Link Removed.

Yeah, that could work out with no mods, possibly. Depends on the input sensitivity and input impedance of the outboard amp. But you won't hurt anything trying it out. Just remember to use a TS/mono/instrument cable instead of a TRS/stereo/balanced cable, as the TRS one would cause some phase cancellation issues in this application.

but that just automatically turns of the combo speakers (sorry I failed to mention that it's the headphone-out on the combo is what I'm trying to mod so I can us it as my monitor too)

How hot is it? Will it overdrive an input? Might not matter to you if it doesn't.

That's a diferent issue entirely. You have a few options here as I see it and have done. First if you have a preamp our or effects out you can use that. If not get a decent DI that will allow you to run off a line in OR a speaker in. The speaker in will allow you to plug into a second speaker out on the combo (assuming you have one). Then as in the case of mine it gives you both a balanced XLR our and a line out. Furthermore a good one will give you a ground lift option and a hight cut.

Note the date of the conversation. A direct box is not the correct tool for the job either.

Some headphone outputs are not ground referenced and should not be used for a line out. Read the manual for the amp in question first.
