Headphones / Speakers for transcribing?

What do you prefer when learning songs by ear?

Headphones?

Speakers with a sub woofer?

Speaker without a sub?

Of course there's an enormous amount of different products, but in general?

Thanks.

I prefer something without excessive low end. I like to hear the fundamental as clearly as possible. I find Grados do a great job of that. The bass is clear without too much low end that would make it sound like a rave.

Headphones, good around the ear noise canceling headphones, I always feel like it puts me in the music, swimming in it. In concert.

A good pair of headphones was the best investment I ever made for transcribing and getting into the music.

I like listening through speakers and playing through an amp when transcribing. It seems to give me a better feel for the music.

There are passages where I can only sort out the details by listening through headphones. In these cases I like a sealed headphone. Comfort and sound quality are important. You want to avoid ear fatigue. I use a pair of Beyerdynamic DT-250's.
