Hearing Issues After Ear Plug Use

Hey, so I just got back from practice and during practice I shoved one of my hear-o ear plugs into my right ear (like an idiot) and I think I hit my ear drum - now my right ear is incredibly muffled and there's a slight ringing...

It's been like this for like 2 hours and a half, I'm kinda freaking... anyone know what's going on?

It problably didnt give you enough protection. I bet the ringing was caused by sound and not the ear plug.

I'd probably see an audiologist regardless. Muffled feeling is not a good sign. I'd almost bet it's a sign of hearing damage, even if the feeling should go away in a few hours/ overnight.

I know the plugs worked, we weren't even playing that loud
maybe I will... ************ I really hope I don't have permanent damage I'm a touring musician....

It might be ear wax. The plug could have compacted the wax, causing the muffling. If it is wax, it won't go away by itself, and a doctor can clean you right out. Best of luck.

That has happened to me, too. I went to an audiologist and she told me that my ear canal was swollen. It happened with Hearo's, too by the way.

Good for you for protecting your ears- hearo's are the best!

There you go. I've experienced this many times - wax has built up in my ears, and the use of an earplug compacted it into my ear canal.

You can try to clean it yourself using a combination of hydrogen peroxide, warm water and a syringe specifically designed for this purpose, or you can have a nurse remove it.

I just didn't put earplugs in my ears for 3 or 4 days, and it gradually got better. I went back to the audiologist about a week later, and everything was cool. Ive used Hearos ever since, with no probs.(I just don't stick 'em in as far)

Your local drug store should have them, and I don't think they're very expensive. One of those rubber bulbs can work too, but they're not as effective as a syringe.

Of course, the safe bet is to see a doctor.

I would still highly reccommend seeing a doctor unless (like me) you have a known wax build-up problem. Just saying...

It is earwax. If you have any trouble equalizing that ear, flush it out, have a doctor do it. But I'd say that is what's up.

IME, the doctor is see is an ENT. The doc will vacuum the wax out. Have the doc so both ears just to be safe.

What I do is to use cotton swabs to clean my ear drums after a shower. I had ear infections regularly. All my docs told me not to do this. For me, no compacted wax or ear infections for over 10 years. If you start immediately after having your ear canals cleaned and if you do it gently, no harm, no foul.

YMMV, etc.

If you have a wax buildup issue, you can learn to clean your ears safely on your own, but I would DEFINITELY have a doctor show you how to do it correctly. It's not like you will always have to go to the doctor to get it done.

Oh the stories I could tell about what's come out of my canals...............
