Doing chord substitutions on the fly is something I feel like I struggle with. There are times when I'll play with a pianist who will comp very literally and I can pick up on what he's doing but other times I feel like I just can't hear what's going on.
I do try to ask after the song when I hear someone doing something funky with the changes but I've found a lot of guys can't really explain what they're doing very well.
How can I work on it? Right now I look through the changes for a tune and try to spot where subs would work. I guess I'm trying to build a mental library of typical places where subs sound good and what they sound like in that context.
Any particular bassists that do this stuff a lot I should be transcribing?
Thanks
